Equipment variants

The world of adventure book series has been published in various configurations. The reason for this was probably immense sales difficulties since the beginning of the 1970s, which prompted the publisher to sell book blocks that had not yet been bound to the Stuttgart-based Unipart-Verlag, which published them in a cheaper cover. Some volumes also appeared under the name of the Bamberg Ustad Verlag, a subsidiary of Karl May Verlag.

Equipment variants:

  • Original edition: Red all-linen binding with gold embossing and mounted colored cover picture, golden shield and Art Nouveau ornaments on the back (like the green Karl May volumes): All volumes were published in this variant except for Strangers in Paradise .
  • So-called "department store" edition of the Unipart publishing house: Green (or brown) cardboard cover with colored cover picture: This variant appeared in episodes in Texas , Buck shoots too much , Isabel's yacht , jungle gold , The last of the caciques , The devil's mill in Orinoco , Gold in New Frisco , Sergeant Berry , The Bee Hunter , Marco Polo I + II , Wildes Mexico , Stranger in Paradise , We Sea Gypsies II-IV , The Bloody Log House , The Adventurers and The Piper I-VI , Gold Fever .
  • "Colorful edition" of the Ustad publishing house: One-colored all-linen cover with black blind embossing and mounted colored cover picture, the golden shield is only indicated by black outlines, the Art Nouveau decorations are missing: This variant was published in jungle gold (brown linen), Die Jacht Isabel (light red linen ), Stranger in Paradise (blue linen).
  • Original edition with cover: Red all-linen cover with a golden shield and Art Nouveau ornaments on the back, a cover picture is missing, instead the book is wrapped in an illustrated paper cover and outwardly corresponds to the historical novels published by Ustad-Verlag from 1968 to 1969 : This variant was published The yacht Isabel .
  • "Test edition in white linen": White cardboard cover with a linen structure with gold embossing, a golden shield and Art Nouveau ornaments on the back, with a mounted cover image: This variant was made up of pirate blood and deadly enmity . This is a very small binding quota that Joachim Schmid, the editor of both volumes, had produced for his own collection. Most of the specimens ended up in collectors' hands through sales and donations.

Historical novels

In 1968 and 1969, eight further novels were published by Karl May and Ustad publishers, which clearly differed visually from the World of Adventure series . Apparently the intention was to publish both this and all of the following adventure novels in a more contemporary cover (single-color full linen with illustrated paper cover, large format; The Islands of Captain Kidd in Efalin with illustrated paper cover, small format). In 1971, however, they returned to the old series. In later advertising brochures World of Adventure and the so-called historical novels (although the most recently published volume by Robert Arden is not a work of this genre) were often offered together under the name Masterpieces of Tension - entertainment for young and old .

  • The Heretic (1968)
  • Author Sir John Retcliffe
  • The she-wolf of Skadar (1968)
  • Around the Black Sea (1968)
  • Sevastopol (1968)

( Also available in a slipcase under the title Der Krimkrieg I-III )

  • Author Frank Cornel
  • Headhunter (1969)
  • The Pedlar and His Legacy (1969)
  • Genghis Chan (1969)
  • Author Robert Arden
  • The Islands of Captain Kidd (1969)

Of the first six novels in this series, a cheap "department store" edition was also published in the early 1980s.

The eyes of the sphinx

After the last volume, Strangers in Paradise , was published by Ustad-Verlag in 1971 , the series was discontinued for lack of success. Until the 1990s, however, a large part of the 33 volumes were still available in stores, Sergeant Berry and Die Sturmbraut have not even fully sold to this day. As early as 1996, however, the KMV seemed to have forgotten the debacle with the World of Adventure , because it made another, more or less unsuccessful attempt to bring authors such as Robert Kraft or Werner Legère to a larger reading audience. In the simply furnished book series The Eyes of the Sphinx , which appeared in Edition Ustad , an imprint for which the name of the no longer existing Ustad publishing house was revitalized, the following volumes were published:

  • Author Robert Kraft
  • The Nihilite Expedition (1996)
  • The game shooters from Kilimanjaro (1996)
  • The Riddles of Garden Hall (1996)
  • The New Earth (1996)

( Also available in a slipcase under the title The Eyes of the Sphinx )

  • King king (1997)
  • The Flatboot Man and Other Stories (1997)
  • Author Werner Legère
  • Lost Among The Corsairs (1997)
  • The Night of Santa Rita (1997)

Outside the eyes of the Sphinx , Edition Ustad 2003 published a licensed edition of Felix Dahn's Ein Kampf um Rom .
