Manfred Seitz

Manfred Seitz (born September 17, 1928 in Winterhausen ; † April 28, 2017 in Erlangen ) was a German Protestant theologian and university professor .

Live and act

Manfred Seitz was born the son of a pastor. From 1947 to 1951 he studied theology in Neuendettelsau , Heidelberg and Erlangen and received his doctorate in 1958 under Eduard Steinwand . He then worked in various parishes and offices of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Bavaria , including as a personal advisor to Regional Bishop Hermann Dietzfelbinger . He was also a lecturer at the Neuendettelsau Pastoral College.

In 1966, Seitz was appointed professor for practical theology at Heidelberg University. From 1972 until his retirement in 1994 he was professor of practical theology at the University of Erlangen and shaped several generations of students in a theology based on the Bible and creed , among others , Evangelical-Lutheran with Karlmann Beyschlag , Ingetraut Ludolphy , Niels-Peter Moritzen and Reinhard Slenczka Embossing. Together with Karlmann Beyschlag, he initiated so-called “life word groups” in the 1980s, which had the spiritual life of theology students in view, including through weekly “memoratio et meditiatio” of a Bible verse. From 1969 to 1993 he also headed the pastoral college of the United Evangelical Lutheran Church in Germany (VELKD).

On the occasion of his 80th birthday in September 2008, Seitz was honored by the church and university:

He had with his comments on pastoral care , worship and spiritual community building influenced many members of today's generation pastor.
He was looking for a bridge between medicine , technology and theology across faculties .
He made a deep impression on many university members as a preacher and as a personal pastor up to and including terminal care .

In 2002, Seitz criticized the decision of the Evangelical Church in Hesse and Nassau to allow the blessing of same-sex unions, pointing out that the Bible rejects practiced homosexuality. He asked the question: "Who gives the rulers of the Hesse-Nassau Church the right to declare important biblical statements to be invalid?"
