Hermann Bezzel (born May 18, 1861 in Wald near Gunzenhausen , Middle Franconia ; † June 8, 1917 in Munich ; from 1910 Hermann von Bezzel ) was rector of the Neuendettelsau deaconess institution and senior consistorial president of the Bavarian regional church.

Life

On May 18, 1861, Hermann Bezzel was born as the first of twelve children in Wald , now part of Gunzenhausen ( Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen district ). His father was the Waldorf village pastor Ludwig Bezzel. After attending school at the Carolinum grammar school in Ansbach , he studied philology and theology in Erlangen . He joined the fraternity of the Bubenreuther . After eight years as a teacher in Regensburg, he was appointed rector of the Diakonissenanstalt in Neuendettelsau in 1891 . There he led the institution, which was shaped by its founder Wilhelm Löhe , to new recognition and inner strength. In 1909 he became head of the senior consistory (i.e. head of administration) of the church leadership of the Bavarian Evangelical Lutheran Church in Munich. In 1910 Bezzel was raised to the nobility. At the beginning of the First World War he called for holy war . He died on June 8, 1917 in Munich and was buried in Wald.

Services

Hermann von Bezzel was appointed to Neuendettelsau as the successor to Rector Friedrich Meyer . Regarding his work, he said: “Jesus' witnesses are quiet people. They don't talk a lot, they're not busy, but you can see them at work ”. In the fight against liberalism on the one hand and a rigid orthodoxy on the other, he strove all his life to be a good Lutheran, but above all a Christian. He coined the word "prayed through rooms" and some other words that were included in various collections of quotations.

During his time as rector, the so-called “ Höhere Töchterschule ” was founded in Neuendettelsau (1903).
