Theodor Schober (pastor)

Theodor Schober (born August 10, 1918 in Zirndorf near Nuremberg ; † July 26, 2010 in Lossburg near Freudenstadt ) was a German Evangelical Lutheran pastor and president of the Diaconal Work of the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD).

Live and act

Theodor Schober was born the son of a pastor. He did military service and was taken prisoner of war . Schober studied in Tübingen and Erlangen , where he also received his doctorate in 1948 on The Old Reformed Doctrine of Law . He served his vicariate in Erlangen and was also a pastor there.

In 1955 he became rector of the Diakoniewerk Neuendettelsau , 1963 president of the Diakonie in Stuttgart . He held this office until 1984. From 1980 to 1981 he was also President of the German Hospital Society (DKG).

From 1979 to 1988 he was President of the International Association for Internal Mission and Diakonia . From 1984 he looked after imprisoned National Socialist war criminals as the “EKD Commissioner for the Pastoral Care of German War Convicts in Foreign Custody” . He was also chairman of the Association of the German Evangelical Station Mission .

Theodor Schober was an important Protestant social politician and as such a critic of the excessive welfare state. Under him, the Protestant Diakonie became an employer for 270,000 employees. He maintained contacts with the Catholic Caritas and the Federation of Evangelical Churches in the GDR . He has campaigned for the integration of foreign workers since the 1960s .

Honors

In 1969 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Seoul , in 1980 the state of Baden-Württemberg awarded him the title of professor, in 1983 he received the Great Federal Cross of Merit and in 1990 the Great Federal Cross of Merit with a Star.
