Christian Appel , from 1834 Freiherr von Appel (* 1785 in Neusohl , † January 22, 1854 in Graz ) was an Imperial Austrian Lieutenant Field Marshal .

Life

In 1798 Appel joined the Melas cuirassier regiment as a simple soldier . The following year he was promoted to lieutenant . So he took part in the campaigns of 1805, 1809 and 1812. In the campaigns from 1813 to 1815 he acted as second Rittmeister . There, and at the Battle of the Nations near Leipzig , he showed himself so bravely and skillfully that he was appointed first Rittmeister. He finally became a major in 1822.

From 1826 von Appel was second general adjutant to Emperor Franz II , from 1835 first. On February 4, 1834, he was promoted to colonel in 1829 , and at the same time was raised to the status of Austrian baron in Vienna with his appointment as commander of the Leopold Order . Also in 1834 he was promoted to major general.

After the emperor's death, Appel was given a leave of absence at his own request and lived in Styria and Italy . When he returned later, he became a field marshal lieutenant and in 1848 the commander of the military in Ljubljana . In the 1849 campaigns he participated as commander of the 3rd Army Corps. He took part in the Battle of Mortara and the Battle of Novara . At Novara he had a share in the victory. When Novara was taken, von Appel also disarmed the province of Bergamo .

For his services to Novara, von Appel received the Order of the Iron Crown (Grand Cross). He also became a privy councilor . He went into retirement , which he spent in Graz. He died there in 1854.
