- Dili / East Timor : Karketu Dili wins the championship of the East Timorese league Futebol Amadora one day before the end of the season .
- Cabo San Lucas / Mexico : Tropical storm Lidia causes severe damage to the southern tip of Baja California due to heavy rain and gusts of wind . At least twenty people are killed.

- Krakow / Poland : The German men's national volleyball team is contesting an EM final for the first time in its history. The final of the 30th Men's Volleyball European Championship is lost with 2: 3 sets against Russia . For the Russians it is the second European title after the Soviet Union won the title twelve times.
- Frankfurt am Main / Germany : Evacuation of 60,000 people in Frankfurt am Main to defuse a bomb from the Second World War.
- Pyongyang / North Korea : The Asian country North Korea is conducting a nuclear weapon test on September 3, 2017 . It was the sixth nuclear test carried out in North Korea since 2006 and the strongest since then.
- Xiamen / China : Start of the three-day summit meeting of the BRICS countries .

- Washington, DC / United States : US President Donald Trump ends the deportation protection program for people who illegally immigrated to the USA as minors .

- Atlanta / United States : The financial services company Equifax announces one of the largest data thefts in history, which was discovered on July 29, 2017.
- Mexico : An earthquake of intensity 8.2 M w off the coast of the state of Chiapas with intense earthquake lights claims many lives.
- San Juan / Puerto Rico : Hurricane Irma hits several Caribbean islands, killing several people and devastating most of the settlements in the process. In the Free State of Puerto Rico, around 60% of the population are homeless as a result of the weather event.

- Livorno / Italy : A severe Mediterranean low causes a storm with heavy rain in the Italian port city and its surroundings. Flash floods , landslides and mudslides cause property damage to houses, infrastructure and motor vehicles amounting to at least 215 million euros.

- Berlin / Germany : Against the AFD - leading candidate Alexander Gauland directs prosecutor an investigation to examine possible sedition in his testimony against the SPD - Integration Commissioner Aydan Özoğuz one in which he said that they should "dispose of Anatolia".

- Zadar / Croatia : The same low pressure area that caused a severe storm in Livorno on September 9th, brings another heavy rain event with flooding, which causes property damage of over a billion Croatian kuna in Zadar and the surrounding area.

- Lima / Peru : At the 130th IOC session, the venues for the Summer Olympics in 2024 and 2028 will be announced. For 2024 there was only one application for Paris , France , and for 2028 for Los Angeles , United States .
- Northern Germany: Storm low Sebastian causes damage, the train service is temporarily suspended.

- Dili / East Timor : Marí Alkatiri is sworn in as East Timor's Prime Minister for the second time, replacing Rui Maria de Araújo .
- Solar System : The NASA brings the spacecraft Cassini , after 20 years of successful exploration of Saturn and its moons planned lack of fuel to burn-out.

- Istanbul / Turkey : The 40th men's basketball European championship ends with a 93-85 final victory for the Slovenian national team against the Serbian team .

- Puebla / Mexico : An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.1 M w hits the center of Mexico. According to initial estimates, several hundred people are killed.

- New York / United States : On the sidelines of this year's UN General Assembly, around 50 states, including Austria , are signing the treaty banning nuclear weapons .

- Fortaleza / Brazil , Friedrichshafen / Germany : The Lufthansa "Landshut" aircraft, hijacked in 1977, is being brought back to Germany. Two An124 and Il76 cargo planes transport the dismantled Boeing 737-200 to Lake Constance Airport, where around 1,000 onlookers, including the then co-pilot Jürgen Vietor and the flight attendant at the time, Gabriele von Lutzau, watch the arrival.

- Berlin / Germany : The election to the 19th German Bundestag ends with heavy losses for the parties in the grand coalition . The party of the incumbent Chancellor Angela Merkel , CDU , remains the strongest force. The Union parties unite 32.9% of the votes, followed by the SPD with 20.5%. The alternative for Germany will move into the Bundestag for the first time, with a proportion of 12.6% it will have the third highest number of second votes .
- Berlin / Germany : After the official result of the referendum on the continued operation of Berlin-Tegel Airport , 56.1 percent of Berliners were in favor of continued operation, 41.7 percent against.

- Erbil / Iraq : In the independence referendum of the Kurdistan Autonomous Region in Northern Iraq, which has existed since 1970 , a majority votes for national independence for the region.

- Mumbai / India : At least 22 people die and 36 are injured in a mass panic at a train station in Mumbai , India .

- Essen / Germany : In an interview with the Funke Media Group gives Saxon Prime Minister Stanislaw Tillich ( CDU ) of the refugee policy of Chancellor Angela Merkel a "shared responsibility" for votes gains the Alternative for Germany in the elections to the German Bundestag on 24 September : "People want Germany to remain Germany."
- Sylt / Germany : An Airbus A320 of the insolvent airline Air Berlin shoots over the runway when landing on Sylt.
