Storm depression Sebastian

The storm Sebastian was a storm , which drew on 13 and 14 September 2017 parts of Europe. On September 13, 2017, it caused severe damage in northern Germany and northern European countries. In Germany, public institutions have been closed and residents have been told not to take to the streets. At least three people were killed. Hurricane gusts, heavy rain and increased water levels were the consequences of the storm.

The storm low

The storm hit the United Kingdom and Ireland on September 12, where it was known as Storm Aileen. After moving across the North Sea and intensifying, the system was renamed Sebastian and arrived in Germany on September 13th.

On September 13, 2017, a storm low reached Northern Europe and Germany. Wind speeds of up to 130 kilometers per hour were achieved. On the German North Sea coast, the water level rose by up to two meters.

Consequences

Public institutes, including universities, schools and daycare centers, were closed in the afternoon.

Fatalities

Three people were killed as a result of the storm low. One was killed by scaffolding, another from a tree and a third was blown into the Elbe with a wheelchair. Other people were injured, some seriously.

Traffic disruption

Due to fallen trees, there were disabilities in rail traffic. In the most severely affected federal states in northern Germany, local transport partially came to a standstill. Connections failed in the ferry traffic to the East Frisian Islands. Shipping traffic between Heligoland and the mainland was also affected.

Wind speeds of up to 130 kilometers per hour were measured in Bremen , Hamburg , Lower Saxony , North Rhine-Westphalia and Schleswig-Holstein . This corresponds to the strength of a hurricane . Three people died from gusts of wind. The water level rose up to two meters. The schools in Flensburg were closed.
