- Berlin / Germany : The Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung's Human Rights Prize is awarded to the organizing committee of the Candle Citizens' Demonstrations in South Korea .
- Brussels / Belgium : The European finance ministers publish a black list of 17 countries that are classified as tax havens .
- Lausanne / Switzerland : The International Olympic Committee forbids the Russian Committee to participate in the 2018 Winter Olympics .
- Meerbusch / Germany : A regional express has run into a freight train. 47 people were injured in the accident, three of them seriously.
- Vienna / Austria : The Constitutional Court decides that same-sex couples are allowed to marry on January 1, 2019.

- Jerusalem / Israel : The United States, under US President Donald Trump, is the first foreign state to diplomatically recognize Jerusalem as the undivided capital of Israel. The United States Embassy in Tel Aviv will be relocated from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem in the coming years .

- Damascus / Syria : The Russian Defense Ministry declares ISIS defeated in Syria.

- Buenos Aires / Argentina : The 11th Ministerial Conference of the World Trade Organization ( WTO ) begins.
- Riyadh / Saudi Arabia : As part of a cautious opening and modernization of the country, the royal family has announced that it will reopen cinemas in 2018 for the first time in three decades.

- Baumgarten an der March / Austria : There was an explosion at a gas station in Baumgarten, Lower Austria . Several people were injured and one person was killed.

- Dresden / Germany : The Saxon State Parliament elects Michael Kretschmer ( CDU ) as the new Prime Minister . His predecessor and party colleague Stanislaw Tillich declared in October that he wanted to "transfer the office to younger hands".
- Istanbul / Turkey : At a special summit of the Organization for Islamic Cooperation in Istanbul, at least 20 heads of state and government decided to recognize East Jerusalem as the capital of Palestine .

- Burbank / United States : The planned sale of the American media company 21st Century Fox , with the exception of the news - and some national sports channels, to the Walt Disney Company is officially announced. The price of the acquisition is expected at 52.4 billion US dollars lie.
- Washington, DC / United States : The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) votes against net neutrality in the United States.

- Villa Santa Lucia / Chile : At least 16 people die from flash floods and landslides.
- Eastern Samar / Philippines : Tropical storm Kai-Tek hits the province of Eastern Samar. The effects of the storm destroyed more than 4,000 homes and killed 91 people.

- Vienna / Austria : The Federal Government Kurz I is appointed and sworn in by Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen .

- Berlin / Germany : A person, according to the police, a 58-year-old man, drove a car into the Willy Brandt House . He did this after placing a bag with easily flammable materials in front of the CDU party headquarters. The flames set off in the house were extinguished by a sprinkler system .
- Guatemala City / Guatemala : Guatemala is the first country after the decision of US President Donald Trump announced that Jerusalem as the capital of Israel to recognize and relocate its embassy there.
- Manila / Philippines : Typhoon Tembin destroys houses built in the Philippines in the mountain villages near Tubod and in the city of Piagapo close to the rivers, killing hundreds as well as numerous missing people.
- Vals / Austria : In a rock fall in Vals, around 150 inhabitants of the valley are trapped.

- Cape Town / South Africa : A prolonged period of drought is forcing the authorities to heavily ration water for the population. If the drought continues, there is a risk that the water supply will be suspended at the end of April 2018 and that it will be replaced by centralized collection points.
- Tehran / Iran : In Iran there are increasing demonstrations across the country against excessively high prices and against government policy .

- The Hague / Netherlands : The International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia ceases its work after 24 years . Out of a total of 161 accused, 90 were convicted.
- Gundremmingen / Germany : In the course of the energy transition, Block B of the Gundremmingen nuclear power plant (KGG) with an output of 1344 megawatts was shut down after 33 years of operation in accordance with the Atomic Energy Act (Section 7) of 2011 . Block C will follow by the end of 2021 at the latest. The shareholders of the KGG are RWE Power and PreussenElektra (formerly E.ON Kernkraft).
