Baumgarten an der March (Croatian Pangort na Moravi) is a small place and a cadastral community of the municipality Weiden an der March in Lower Austria with 192 inhabitants (status 2001).

Significance of the place in the energy industry

The place is of great importance for the European energy industry because a natural gas distribution center is located there, which was created in 1959 from the production station of the Zwerndorf gas field . The first gas delivery from the Soviet Union took place in 1968. Over the decades Baumgarten has developed into one of the most important hubs for the European natural gas supply. Every year around 40 billion m³ of natural gas is distributed to Austria and to Western, Southern and Southeastern Europe via the Baumgarten node.

Distribution stations from Gas Connect Austria and TAG GmbH, operator of the Trans Austria gas pipeline, are located on an area of 18  hectares . The plant consists of filter separators, gas drying systems, several compressor units (some of them electric compressors), gas coolers, measuring sections and much more. The natural gas arriving here is compressed and pumped into the West-Austria-Gasleitung (WAG) and the Trans-Austria-Gasleitung (TAG). Part of the gas is also sent to Hungary via the Hungaria-Austria-Gasleitung (HAG).

There are also gas reserves here in the two underground storage facilities in Tallesbrunn and Schönkirchen, from which gas was previously extracted. The imported gas is pumped into these storage facilities and stored.

Further underground storage facilities are located in Thann and Puchkirchen in Upper Austria and in Haidach near Straßwalchen on the Salzburg / Upper Austria border . The storage facilities in Puchkirchen and Haidach are operated by Rohöl-Aufsuchungs AG (RAG). The entire storage volume of the Austrian underground storage already covers the annual Austrian demand.

During the gas dispute between Ukraine and Russia at the beginning of 2009, in which Russia stopped all gas deliveries, the compressor station was completely shut down.

On December 12, 2017, there was an explosion at the gas distribution station, killing one person and injuring 21 people.
