The Gas Connect Austria GmbH (until the end of 2011 , OMV Gas GmbH ) based in Vienna is a transmission system operator and distribution system operator and 51 percent owned by the Austrian oil and gas group OMV . The company's core business is the marketing of cross-border transport capacities and the provision of capacities for natural gas required domestically. In addition, Gas Connect Austria, as the operator of a 900-kilometer high-pressure natural gas pipeline network, is responsible for its safe operation.

Gas Connect Austria's pipeline network includes the West-Austria-Gasleitung (WAG) , Süd-Ost -leitung (SOL), Hungaria-Austria-Gasleitung (HAG), Penta-West (PW) long -distance pipelines , the March- Baumgarten gas pipeline (MAB) and the Kittsee-Petrzalka gas pipeline (KIP).

Gas Connect Austria's distribution lines, the so-called primary distribution system (PVS), consist of around 40 individual lines and are used for domestic supply.

background

Gas Connect Austria was spun off from the OMV Group as OMV Erdgas GmbH in October 2001 as part of the liberalization of the European gas market . She was initially responsible for the areas of procurement, trading, transport and storage of natural gas in Austria. In October 2002, OMV Erdgas GmbH moved to the floridotower in Vienna- Floridsdorf , thus also separating the premises from the parent company. In May 2004 the name was changed to OMV Gas GmbH . The areas of procurement and trading were spun off into the newly founded OMV Gas International GmbH in 2006 ; the storage business was outsourced in 2010 and continued as an independent company under the name OMV Gas Storage GmbH .

In October 2011 the new Austrian Gas Industry Act was passed in parliament. It is based on the 3rd EU energy package and stipulates the complete separation of network operations from trade and production for integrated energy companies such as OMV - the creation of so-called Independent Transmission Operators (ITO). The new legal situation required a clear demarcation from the outside through a new, independent corporate identity. As a result, OMV Gas GmbH was renamed Gas Connect Austria in January 2012 .

In April 2012, Gas Connect Austria was appointed market area manager for the east market area and in this role is responsible for the coordinated natural gas transport in Austria. The company held this role until May 31, 2017. In addition, the Austrian regulatory authority E-Control certified Gas Connect Austria as an independent transmission operator (ITO) in July 2012

In the course of the unbundling of the Austrian transmission system operators required by the EU, the Trans Austria Gasleitung (TAG) was brought into TAG GmbH by Gas Connect Austria in September 2014 . Since then, TAG has been operated by the Austrian transmission network operator Trans Austria Gasleitung GmbH and is owned by them. At the same time, Baumgarten-Oberkappel-Gasleitungsgesellschaft was merged with Gas Connect Austria.

The parent company OMV, which is expected to have to write off values due to oil prices expected to remain low in 2015, announced in October 2015 that it would sell up to 49% stake to investors in 2016. In December 2016 the sale of 49% to a consortium consisting of Allianz and Snam will be completed.

Baumgarten gas distribution station

A major hub of the Austrian gas supply is the Gas Connect station in Baumgarten , which is important for the supply of Austria and large parts of Europe. There, natural gas is taken from Russia, Norway and other countries and distributed to Germany, France, Italy, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia and Croatia. In 2015, 40 billion cubic meters of gas were distributed via the Baumgarten station.

On December 12, 2017, there was an explosion in the facility. One person was killed and 21 others injured. As a result, the gas transit to southern Europe and southern Europe was interrupted. This caused bottlenecks in Hungary, Slovakia, Great Britain and Italy, and in some cases the gas price for day-to-day business also rose. According to the Austrian police, the cause was a technical defect.
