Presidential election in Chile 2017

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The presidential election in Chile 2017 was the seventh presidential election in Chile since the Transición after the end of the dictatorship under Augusto Pinochet . It took place on November 19, 2017. At the same time the members of the Chamber of Deputies and 23 of the 43 members of the Senate were elected as well as the members of the regional councils ( Consejos regionales ) of the 15 regions .

In the first ballot on November 19, 2017, none of the seven candidates achieved an absolute majority, which is why there was a runoff between the two best-placed candidates, Sebastián Piñera and Alejandro Guillier , on December 17, 2017 . Piñera won after almost all votes were counted (54.6 percent). His challenger Guillier (45.4 percent) admitted a "painful defeat".

On March 11, 2018, Piñera took office.

In contrast to the previous parliament, a relatively strong third force was able to establish itself in Chile in 2017. The left-wing party alliance Frente Amplio (FA)  , which was only founded in January 2017 , achieved a result that was not expected by observers and with immediate effect put 20 members in parliament and with Juan Ignacio Latorre Riveros a senator for the constituency of Valparaíso . It was able to establish itself as the third political force in Chile. Most of the MPs come from the Revolución Democratica (RD) party .
