The nine candidates in a television debate

On November 17, 2013 , the sixth presidential election since the Transición took place in Chile to determine a successor to the incumbent President Sebastián Piñera ( RN ).

As expected , the socialist ex-president Michelle Bachelet was ahead of the conservative Evelyn Matthei in the first ballot . However, since Bachelet missed the required absolute majority with just under 47 percent, she had to run a runoff against Matthei on December 15, 2013. There Bachelet prevailed with a clear lead over Matthei, she received around 62.2 percent of the vote.
