Candidates
Four candidates ran for election on December 11th, three of which were allied:
- Michelle Bachelet Jeria from the Socialist Party (PS) ran for the center-left alliance Concertación , which also provided the previous president Ricardo Lagos . She has been the country's defense minister since 2002.

The Renovación Nacional , actually part of this alliance, has been supporting its own candidate since May 2005.
- The only candidate from a single party was Sebastián Piñera Echenique from the right-wing Renovación Nacional (RN), which had supported Joaquín Lavín until May.
