The Party for Democracy ( span . Party for Democracy , PPD ) is a center-left Chilean party . It was founded by Ricardo Lagos , Jorge Schaulsohn as an instrumental party to face the national referendum of 1988 and the transition process to democracy.
The PPD is considered a social democratic and left-wing liberal party. Currently, the PPD defines itself according to its "declaration of principle" as a left, democratic, progressive party of equality.
Even so, the PPD has never had a clear and unmistakable political ideology in its history.
history
The Party for Democracy was founded on December 16, 1987 as an instrumental political organization whose main aim was to end the military dictatorship and to restore democracy in Chile through political and peaceful means, affirmed its founder Ricardo Lagos, who later became President of the Republic in the party's constitutional ceremony that the unique requirements for integrating the ranks of the PPD "should be against the institutional system of the dictator Pinochet's regime because it does not lead to democracy and also seeks to defeat it by political means" ".
The party was joined by people who adhered to socialism, such as radical , social democratic , left-liberal , Christian left , Mapuche , communists , even former fighters of the right-wing national and republican parties.
Its first directorate was formed by Ricardo Lagos (ex PS ), President; Manuel Sanhueza (Independent) and Armando Jaramillo (Republican), Vice-Presidents; Jorge Schaulsohn (ex PR ), General Secretary and Rodrigo González (ex MAPU ), Treasurer.
He called in the 1988 referendum to vote "No" and was one of the founding parties of the Concertación de Partidos por la Democracia.
