Evelyn Rose Matthei Fornet (born November 11, 1953 in Santiago de Chile ) is a Chilean economist and politician ( UDI ).

Life

Evelyn Matthei, with German roots from an immigrant family from Kassel and a member of the German minority in Chile , is the daughter of Air Force General Fernando Matthei and his wife Elda. She grew up partly in London , attended German school and lived again in London after the 1973 coup in Chile . From 1974 to 1978 she studied economics at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile , where she worked as a professor from 1979. She also held positions in business. She is married to the economist Jorge Desormeaux.

Under President Sebastián Piñera , she was Minister of Labor and Social Affairs until July 2013. In November 2013 she ran for the electoral alliance Alianza por Chile in the presidential elections in Chile 2013 and reached the runoff election in December with around 25 percent of the vote. In the runoff election Matthei was defeated by Michelle Bachelet , who had ruled from 2006 to 2010 and won 62.2 percent of the vote.
