Marco Enríquez-Ominami (born June 12, 1973 ) is a Chilean - French filmmaker and politician and chairman of the Progressive Party , which he founded in 2010. Previously a member of the socialist Partido Socialista de Chile , he ran in the presidential elections in 2009 as an independent candidate and in 2013 as a candidate of his new party, but missed the runoff in each case.

Life

Enríquez-Ominami is the son of Miguel Enríquez , co-founder and general secretary of the Marxist-Leninist Movimiento de Izquierda Revolucionaria (MIR), who was murdered in 1974 during the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet . He grew up in exile in France and began his professional career as a filmmaker and media observer.

Enríquez-Ominami decided to run for the Chilean presidency because he did not like the opaque allocation of posts in the Concertación : Although there were more suitable candidates in the ranks of the governing coalition, the Christian Democrats pushed through the pale Eduardo Frei Ruiz-Tagle because after two socialist ones Presidents, the Christian Democrats once again had their turn.

In his candidacy, the filmmaker relied primarily on two things: on his youthful charisma and a media campaign about the phenomenon "MEO", as it is called for short. He wrote a blog on his website and announced concerts at the end of the election campaign. In his program, Enríquez-Ominami called for a modern abortion law , the introduction of gay marriage , the disempowerment of the president through the establishment of a prime minister and a tax reform to finance the desolate state education system. Enríquez-Ominami wanted to secure the votes of the young people, but it was questionable from the start whether he could succeed, because only one in five between 18 and 29 years of age was entered in the electoral register.

In the first round of the presidential election on December 13, 2009 , Enríquez-Ominami received 20.14% of the vote and ended up in third place. This meant that he could not qualify for the runoff election in January 2010. He gave no recommendation for his supporters, but wanted to vote for Eduardo Frei with a heavy heart. No major changes are to be expected in either of the two candidates, according to Enríquez-Ominami.

In 2010 he founded the Progressive Party , for which he ran in the 2013 presidential election in Chile , but again missed the runoff election with around 11% of the vote.

In 2017 he produced the documentary " South America - The Failure of the Left ". It was first broadcast on arte in February 2019 .
