Miguel Humberto Enríquez Espinosa

Miguel Humberto Enríquez Espinosa (born March 27, 1944 in Talcahuano , † October 5, 1974 in Santiago de Chile ) was a Chilean medic and politician. From 1967 until his death he was general secretary of the Marxist-Leninist Movimiento de Izquierda Revolucionaria MIR ( Movement of the Revolutionary Left ).

Life

Enríquez was the son of Edgardo Enríquez Frödden , who was Minister of Education under Salvador Allende and ex-rector of the Universidad de Concepción . Enríquez studied medicine and became a neurologist. He was considered a supporter of important Marxists and Leninists, including Lenin and Rosa Luxemburg . Enríquez was also considered a staunch supporter of atheism . When Augusto Pinochet came to power (1973), Enríquez became a leader of the resistance. As a result, however, he was soon shot in a gun battle.

His son Marco Enríquez-Ominami is a member of the socialist party Partido Socialista de Chile and ran unsuccessfully in the 2009 presidential election in Chile .
