- Barcelona / Spain : The government of Catalonia is holding a referendum on the independence of Catalonia from Spain. It is in contradiction to the Spanish constitution , which defines the indivisibility of the state and which the Catalan population voted for on December 6, 1978. The Guardia Civil also uses massive violence so that those who want to participate cannot cast their votes .
- Berlin / Germany : Same-sex marriage is introduced in Germany. The Bundestag passed it in June with a clear majority.
- Paradise / United States : At least 59 people are killed and another 500 injured in a shooting at a music festival . The 64-year-old shooter opened fire at 10:08 p.m. local time .
Monday 2nd October 2017
- Luton / Great Britain : The British airline Monarch Airlines files for bankruptcy and completely ceases flight operations. As a result, around 110,000 British nationals are stuck abroad.
- Stockholm / Sweden : This year's Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine goes to US researchers Jeffrey C. Hall , Michael Rosbash and Michael W. Young .

- Mainz / Germany : The celebrations for the Day of German Unity will take place on October 2nd and 3rd, 2017 in Mainz (Rhineland-Palatinate) and over half a million visitors came.
- Stockholm / Sweden : This year's Nobel Prize in Physics goes to the two Americans Barry Barish and Kip Thorne and the German-American Rainer Weiss .

- Stockholm / Sweden : This year's Nobel Prize in Chemistry goes to the Swiss Jacques Dubochet , the German-American Joachim Frank and the British Richard Henderson .

- Berlin / Germany : Storm depression Xavier causes damage, especially in northern and parts of eastern Germany, and kills seven, including journalist Sylke Tempel . The train service is temporarily suspended.
- Stockholm / Sweden : This year's Nobel Prize for Literature is awarded to the British writer Kazuo Ishiguro .

- Oslo / Norway : This year's Nobel Peace Prize goes to the International Campaign for the Abolition of Nuclear Weapons (ICAN).
- Strasbourg / France : The President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, Pedro Agramunt Font de Mora , declares his resignation.

- Rio de Janeiro / Brazil : Carlos Arthur Nuzman , President of the National Olympic Committee and the Organizing Committee for the 2016 Olympic Games, asks for a temporary release from his office following allegations of corruption, his suspension from the IOC and arrest.
- Warsaw / Poland : On the traditional day of the Rosary Festival, over 150,000 Polish Catholics gather along the country's outer border as part of the Rosenkranz at the border to pray for the “salvation of Poland and the world”.

- Barcelona / Spain : Several hundred thousand people, including the Nobel Prize for Literature Laureate Mario Vargas Llosa , demonstrate against the separation of Catalonia from Spain.
- New Orleans / United States : Hurricane Nate - another hurricane of the 2017 Atlantic hurricane season - hits the coast of the United States after devastating several states in Central America and claiming human lives.

- Stockholm / Sweden : This year's Alfred Nobel Memorial Prize for Economics goes to the American Richard Thaler .

- Nairobi / Kenya : After the presidential election was canceled, opposition leader Raila Odinga is withdrawing his candidacy, so it is unclear whether the new election planned for October 26, 2017 will take place.
- Paris / France : The French parliament decides to largely end oil and gas production on its territory, including in the overseas territories and in the sea, by 2040 for climate protection reasons.

- Herrischried / Germany : After RWE withdrew in 2014, the energy group EnBW, the only remaining carrier, announced the end of its stake in the Atdorf pumped storage power plant project , which was planned since 2008 and will therefore not be implemented.

- Honolulu / United States : Patrick Lange from Germany and Daniela Ryf from Switzerland win the men's and women's competition in the Ironman Hawaii triathlon competition on the Big Island . It is the first win for Lange and the third in a row for Ryf.
- Mogadishu / Somalia : A truck loaded with explosives detonates at an intersection in the capital . At least 300 people are killed in the suicide bombing .

- Hanover / Germany : The early state election in Lower Saxony confirms the end of the red-green coalition under Prime Minister Stephan Weil , whose SPD is more than 3% ahead of the CDU .
- Skopje / Macedonia : nationwide local elections
- Vienna / Austria : The early election of the National Council ends with a victory for the Sebastian Kurz ( ÖVP ) list. The second-placed SPÖ of incumbent Chancellor Christian Kern lands in favor of the voters just ahead of the FPÖ .

- Washington, DC / USA : Scientists announce observation of gravitational wave signal GW170817 . It is the first time that astronomers can measure both gravitational waves and electromagnetic radiation from the same astronomical event.
- The Filipino IS terrorists Isnilon Hapilon and Omare Maute are killed during a military operation with hostage rescue in Marawi .

- Madrid / Spain : 20 days after the controversial independence referendum in the Autonomous Community of Catalonia , the Spanish Council of Ministers announces the removal of the government there and new elections to the parliament of Catalonia . The measures will take effect if the Senate approves.
- Prague / Czech Republic : The Ano party , headed by billionaire Andrej Babiš , is clearly the strongest force in the House of Representatives elections in the Czech Republic . In the previous election she was still in second position; the Czech Pirate Party moves into the House of Representatives for the first time with over 10 percent.

- Buenos Aires / Argentina : The center-right alliance is successful in the parliamentary elections in Argentina . Ex-President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner wins Senate seat
- Ljubljana / Slovenia : In the presidential election in Slovenia 2017 , the incumbent Borut Pahor missed an absolute majority and had to go to a runoff against challenger Marjan Šarec .
- Tokyo / Japan : The Conservative Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) of Prime Minister Shinzō Abe wins the Shūgiin election in 2017 .

- Nairobi / Kenya : The presidential election held in August will be repeated. The head of state, Uhuru Kenyatta , originally won , but the court annulled the election. With protests during the new election there is again deadly violence on the streets.

- Astana / Kazakhstan : The Kazakh government decides to replace the Cyrillic alphabet with the Latin alphabet by 2025 .
- Barcelona , Madrid / Spain : In the afternoon, the members of the Catalan regional parliament vote 70 to 10 for the independence of their region from Spain. In Madrid, the Senate agreed to the coercive measures adopted by the Rajoy cabinet against Catalonia. The Council of Ministers deposed the Catalan regional government later in the day and announced new regional parliament elections in December.
- Berlin / Germany : The airline Air Berlin ends its flight operations with flight AB6210 from Munich to Berlin-Tegel . The airline filed for bankruptcy in August this year .

- Reykjavík / Iceland : In the early parliamentary elections , the conservative parties in the government under Bjarni Benediktsson ( Independence Party ) together lose over 12% of the vote and miss an absolute majority, as do the parties on the left .

- Berlin / Germany : Storm Herwart causes damage in Central Europe and claims nine lives, four of them in Germany. Train traffic in parts of Germany will be temporarily suspended. The bulk carrier Glory Amsterdam runs aground off Langeoog .
- Erbil / Iraq : The President of the Autonomous Region of Kurdistan Masud Barzani declares that he will resign from office after twelve years on October 31. There is currently no successor.
- Mexico City / Mexico : Formula 1 driver Lewis Hamilton from the United Kingdom finished ninth in the third-to-last race of the 2017 World Championship in a Mercedes F1 W08 , making him Formula 1 driver world champion for the fourth time.

- Barcelona , Madrid / Spain : The Spanish Public Prosecutor's Office has brought charges against the Catalan regional president, Carles Puigdemont, who has been deposed from the central government, and other disempowered members of the government. The accused are accused of rebellion, rebellion against state power and embezzlement of public funds. Puigdemont drives to Brussels , Belgium by car .
- Nairobi / Kenya : The electoral commission announces incumbent Uhuru Kenyatta , the only remaining candidate, as the winner of the October 26th presidential election. 98.2% of the voters voted for him.
- Washington, DC / United States : The former campaign leader of US President Donald Trump , Paul Manafort , has been charged with , among other things, conspiracy against the United States and suspected money laundering .

- Berlin / Germany : For the 500th anniversary of the Church Reformation , today's Reformation Remembrance Day is a non-working holiday in all German countries .
- New York / United States : Near four public schools in southern Manhattan , a 29-year-old Uzbek drives a pickup truck onto a pedestrian and bicycle path , hits people and finally rams a school bus. At least eight people die as a result of the perpetrator who invokes Islam. He is shot on the scene and then taken to a hospital.
