The Rajoy II cabinet was in office as the minority government of Spain from October 31, 2016 to June 1, 2018 .

Government formation

In the December 2015 election , the Partido Popular , which had ruled until then, lost its absolute majority in the Spanish parliament. After months of failing to form a coalition government, parliament was dissolved in May 2016. The resulting new election in June 2016 changed little in terms of the majority.

In the first ballot on October 27, 2016, Rajoy was unable to win an absolute majority of 176 out of 350 votes to be elected as prime minister. In the second ballot on October 29, a relative majority was sufficient, so that Rajoy was elected to the office of Prime Minister with 170 votes in favor, 111 deputies rejected with 68 abstentions. Rajoy then formed a minority government that was supported by the Ciudadanos and the Eusko Alderdi Jeltzalea-Partido Nacionalista Vasco .

The Rajoy II government lost a constructive vote of no confidence in the Spanish parliament on June 1, 2018 , with Pedro Sánchez , chairman of the Spanish Socialists ( PSOE ) becoming the new prime minister .
