Luis de Guindos Jurado (born January 16, 1960 in Madrid ) is a Spanish politician of the Partido Popular . Since June 1, 2018 he has been Vice President of the European Central Bank (ECB) .

education

De Guindos studied economics at the Complutense University of Madrid .

From 1988 to 1996 he was Chief Executive Officer of the financial company AB Asesores . From 1996 he worked for the Ministry of Economics, including 2002 to 2004 State Secretary under Economics Minister Rodrigo Rato . During this period he was on the board of the Renfe railway company (1997-2000) and in 2002 at the Sociedad Estatal de Participaciones Industriales , the Spanish state's holding company for the administration of state-owned companies and investments.

After the change of government in 2004 ( the PSOE surprisingly won the elections on March 14, 2004 ; Zapatero formed the Zapatero I cabinet ), de Guindos worked for a few months at the University of Navarra , a private university of the Catholic lay organization Opus Dei in Navarre. On September 1, 2004, he joined the board of the Spanish subsidiary of the investment bank Lehman Brothers . From 2006 he was the company's Chief Executive Officer in Spain and Portugal.
Lehman Brothers filed for bankruptcy in September 2008 . De Guindos worked at PricewaterhouseCoopers from November 2008 to 2010 as head of the Spanish finance section. In 2010 and 2011 he headed the “PwC and IE Business School Center for the Finance Sector” at the Instituto de Empresa business school .

Political career

On November 20, 2011, the PP received absolute majorities in both chambers of the Cortes Generales in the parliamentary elections . Mariano Rajoy was elected Prime Minister on December 20, 2011. He appointed de Guindos to his cabinet as Minister of Economics . On June 5, 2015, de Guindos announced that he would run against the then incumbent Jeroen Dijsselbloem for the chairmanship of the Eurogroup . His term of office ended on July 21, 2015. At the meeting of the Eurogroup on July 13, 2015 in Brussels, he was defeated by Dijsselbloem in a fighting vote. In February 2018 he was nominated for the post of Deputy President of the European Central Bank and was finally elected in March.

Private

De Guindos is married and has two children. He describes himself as a practicing Catholic, he is close to the Catholic lay movement Opus Dei .
