Interior Minister Gérard Collomb speaks of an "unbearable" situation and complains about an "unprecedented level of violence". Migrants stranded in Calais on their planned onward journey to the UK .
- Ottawa / Canada : The Canadian Senate decides that the English-language version of the national anthem O Canada will in future include all genders. This is already the case with the French-speaking variant.
- Washington, DC / United States : National Geographic Magazine reports on an American-European group of researchers who discovered the ruins of around 60,000 Mayan structures in the jungle of Guatemala , near Tikal . The researchers used lidar laser technology in their work .

- Macerata / Italy : In the central Italian city , a neo-Nazi shoots African immigrants from a moving car . Six people are injured, the perpetrator is then arrested in front of a war memorial .

- Minneapolis / United States : Super Bowl 52 in American football between the Philadelphia Eagles and the New England Patriots ends 41:33. In the history of the Eagles, it will be their first victory in the Super Bowl when they take part for the third time.
- Nicosia / Cyprus : The current incumbent Nikos Anastasiadis wins the presidential election in Cyprus .
- San José / Costa Rica : In the presidential election in Costa Rica there will be a runoff between Carlos Alvarado Quesada and Fabricio Alvarado Muñoz , which will take place in April 2018. The parliamentary elections taking place at the same time in Costa Rica are largely won by parties left of the political center such as Partido Acción Ciudadana .

- Malé / Maldives : President Abdulla Yameen imposed a state of emergency on the capital after days of riots between the opposition and the police. The country's chief judge, another supreme court judge and opposition leader, former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom , are also arrested. The background to the political crisis is a ruling on the release and rehabilitation of several opposition politicians, including the former President Mohamed Nasheed , which the current head of state does not implement. If the rehabilitated opposition politicians were to resume their mandates and return to parliament, President Yameen would no longer have a majority there.

- Ghouta / Syria : The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights has reported around 500 civilians killed in the eastern part of the city of Ghouta since last Sunday. Around 400,000 civilians have been completely encircled since 2013 . Eastern Ghouta is under the control of Jeysh al-Islam, which was supported by Saudi Arabia until 2017, and Falaq al-Rahman, which was formerly supported by Qatar and Turkey . It is besieged by the Syrian armed forces loyal to the government and attacked from the air in conjunction with the Russian armed forces .
