On February 6, 2018 at 11:50 p.m. local time (4:50 p.m. Central European Time ), an earthquake struck near the city of Hualien on the east coast of Taiwan .

event

The epicenter of the quake was in the Pacific Ocean , about 20 kilometers off the east coast of the island of Taiwan and about ten kilometers below the sea floor. The Taiwan Central Meteorological Office gave the magnitude of the earthquake 6.0. Other earthquake measuring stations worldwide determined even higher values ( USGS : 6.4, GFZ : 6.3, CENC : 6.5, JMA : 6.3). The main quake was followed by numerous smaller quakes, three of which had a magnitude greater than 5.0: at 2:00 a.m. local time (M W 5.2), at 2:07 a.m. (M W 5.4) and at 3:15 a.m. (M W 5.4).

The nearby city of Hualien , the capital of the district of the same name, was mainly affected by the quake . There, the ground floor of the ten-story Marshal Hotel collapsed and several other buildings were badly damaged and numerous people were trapped in the buildings. Rescue and recovery operations began immediately afterwards and, at the instigation of Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen , appropriate emergency plans were put into effect. About 280 people were injured. 14 of the total of 17 dead were killed in the Yun Men Tsui Ti (雲 門 翠 堤 „," Green Cloud Gate ") building complex.

Shortly after the quake, donation accounts were set up for earthquake relief. Politicians from all political directions donated considerable sums in some cases, supplemented by donations from the economy, so that 24 hours after the event, NT $ 170 million (about 4.71 million euros) was raised. By February 9, donations had grown to NT $ 600 million. The Taiwanese government provided NT $ 929 million (US $ 25.7 million) in emergency aid to Hualien County. In the days that followed, experts called for greater investment in the earthquake safety of older buildings. This would particularly affect buildings that were built before 1999, when building regulations were tightened after the Jiji earthquake .

The quake occurred exactly two years to the day after the Kaohsiung earthquake in 2016 , which claimed 117 lives on February 6, 2016 (local time).

The epicenter of the quake was in the subduction zone between the Philippine and Eurasian plates . There had been increased earthquake activity in Taiwan since February 3, 2018, and a total of 19 earthquakes with a magnitude of at least 4.5 were recorded from February 3 to 6, 2018.
