The 2018 presidential election in Costa Rica was won by Carlos Alvarado Quesada . In a runoff election on April 1, 2018, he prevailed against Fabricio Alvarado Muñoz (39.2%) with 60.8% of the valid votes .

In the first ballot on February 4, Alvarado Muñoz was still ahead of Alvarado Quesada (21.7%) with 24.9%. Alvarado Muñoz was nominated by the Partido Restauración Nacional (PRN), which was founded in 2005 and which had become the second strongest force in parliament with 14 of 57 seats (previously only 1 seat) in the 2018 parliamentary election (at the same time as the first round of the presidential election). Alvarado Quesada is a member of the Partido Acción Ciudadana (PAC), which also includes the outgoing President Luis Guillermo Solís . Solís could not run again because the constitution did not allow direct re-election of the president.
