Tuesday 1st May 2018
- Yerevan / Armenia : After Serzh Sargsyan resigned, the first round of elections for a new prime minister took place in parliament . The only candidate was the opposition politician Nikol Pashinyan , who had previously organized the large- scale demonstrations that had urged Sargsyan to resign. However, he did not receive the required majority, so that another ballot is necessary. Pashinyan called for a general strike .
- Mubi / Nigeria : A suicide bomber blows himself up in the Kasuwan Gwanjo clothing market in front of a mosque and another bomber about 200 meters away when visitors fled after the first explosion. At least 27 people are killed. Already in 2014 and 2017 more than 90 people died in suicide attacks by the Islamist Boko Haram in Mubi.
- Rabat / Morocco : Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita accuses Iran of supporting the independence movement Frente Polisario in Western Sahara, which is annexed by Morocco, and announces the break in diplomatic relations.
- São Paulo / Brazil: In a fire in the 24-story high-rise Wilton Paes de Almeida in Largo do Paiçandu occupied by 146 homeless families, it collapses. At least one person is killed and another 46 people are missing. 428 people were placed in emergency shelters. When the skyscraper collapsed, the neighboring Martin Luther Church, built in 1908 by German immigrants, is almost completely destroyed.

- Bangui / Central African Republic : At least 16 people were killed in a series of attacks and armed clashes between the criminal organization Force and security forces in the Catholic Cathédrale Notre-Dame in the Archdiocese of Bangui and at a mosque. In accordance with its mandate, MINUSCA immediately dispatched UN soldiers for reinforced patrols in the most important locations in the capital in cooperation with the security forces.
- New York City / United States : The rating agency Standard & Poor's put the credit worthiness ( credit rating ) of Turkey for long-term loans to the level of BB- and short-term loans to ex-B.
- Savannah / United States : A Military Transporter WC-130J of the US Air Force weather research rushed to the state road 21 of Georgia near the airport Savannah / Hilton Head from. All five crew members were killed, including two soldiers from the Puerto Rico National Guard.
- Tripoli / Libya : At least 12 people were killed and seven others injured in an attack by two suicide bombers from the Islamic State (IS) on the building of the State Electoral Commission (HNEC) in Ghout al Shaal in the west of the capital.

- London / United Kingdom : local elections
- Munich / Germany : The Higher Regional Court found that the placement of people without residence status in church asylum does not protect against criminal proceedings for illegal residence in Germany. However, a case-by-case examination initiated by the churches constitutes a legitimate postponement of the proceedings. The court therefore acquits a Nigerian from the charge of illegal residence.

- Cambo-les-Bains / France : The dissolution of the separatist Basque underground organization Euskadi Ta Askatasuna (ETA) is officially announced during a conference. On May 2nd, 2018, the Spanish online newspaper Eldiario.es published a letter, dated April 16, 2018, announcing the dissolution of all ETA structures. For almost 60 years the organization waged a violent struggle for the independence of the Spanish part of the Basque Country.
- Copenhagen / Denmark : Start of the men's ice hockey world championship in Copenhagen and Herning in Denmark
- Stockholm / Sweden : The Nobel Prize Committee for Literature will not choose a winner this year. First of all, allegations of sexual harassment and corruption are to be completely clarified in the committee, and this year's award could then be made up for in 2019.

- Halmstad / Sweden : The Chinese team wins gold in the women's table tennis team by beating Japan in the final.

- Innsbruck / Tyrol : Georg Willi ( Greens ) wins the second round of the mayoral election with almost 53% and becomes the first “green” mayor in an Austrian capital .
- Kiel / Germany : Local elections in Schleswig-Holstein 2018
- Salzburg / Austria : FC Red Bull Salzburg are prematurely announced as 2018 Austrian football champions after their 4-1 win against SK Sturm Graz . It is the fifth championship title in a row for the club.

- Sanaa / Yemen : During the civil war , the Islamic military coalition led by Saudi Arabia attacks the presidential palace from the air. According to initial reports, at least six civilians died in the two attacks.

- Cannes / France : The 71st International Film Festival opens with the film Open Secret (international title Everybody knows ) by the Iranian director Asghar Farhadi . The festival management will not allow productions by the American company Netflix , whose business model is video-on-demand content for subscribers, this year.
- Damascus / Syria : According to SOHR, at least 15 people, including eight members of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard (Pasdaran), were killed in a suspected Israeli rocket attack south of the capital near al-Kiswah (Kissoue) with the aim of hitting an arms depot . In the Israeli-occupied part of the Golan Heights on the border with Syria, the armed forces were also placed on alert.
- Yerevan / Armenia : The opposition politician Nikol Pashinyan was elected as the new Prime Minister by parliament in the second ballot . He had previously organized the large demonstrations that had urged Prime Minister Serzh Sargsyan to resign.
- Washington, DC / United States : The United States get out of the so-called " nuclear deal " (Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action) from July 2015 to Iran from. It contains contractual rules designed to prevent Iran from building nuclear weapons and was overseen by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The new US ambassador in Berlin , Richard Grenell , stated with regard to further US sanctions against Iran that German companies operating in Iran should immediately cease operations. The Federation of German Industries (BDI) and the Association of German Chambers of Commerce and Industry (DIHK) call on the German government and the European Union (EU) to protect European trade with Iran.

- Bikoro / Democratic Republic of the Congo : In the small town of Bikoro near the border with the Republic of Congo in the province of Equateur , the World Health Organization (WHO) has confirmed the outbreak of Ebola .
- Frankfurt am Main / Germany : The Dom-Römer area, which has been reconstructed for around 200 million euros, is now fully accessible to the public for the first time. The newly built area is historically significant due to the coronation route of the Roman-German kings and emperors along the Alter Markt alley .
- Kabul / Afghanistan : Four suicide bombers from the Islamic State (IS) or the Taliban blow themselves up in the Dascht-e Bartschi district and in the Schar-e Naw district. At least 12 people are killed.
- Klagenfurt / Austria : In the final of the ÖFB Cup , SK Sturm Graz wins 1-0 after extra time against FC Red Bull Salzburg and is thus the 2018 Austrian Football Cup winner .
- Kuala Lumpur / Malaysia : The parliamentary elections are won by the opposition alliance Pakatan Harapan (Pact of Hope) led by former Prime Minister Mahathir bin Mohamad .
- Newbury / United Kingdom : The Vodafone Group announces an agreement to take over the activities of British Liberty Global in Germany, Romania, the Czech Republic and Hungary worth 18.4 billion euros. The Federal Cartel Office has yet to approve the resulting market concentration of the cable network operators Vodafone (formerly Kabel Deutschland ) and Unitymedia in Germany.
- Münster / Germany : The 101st German Catholic Day begins. Its motto is: "Search for peace".
- Nakuru / Kenya : After heavy rains, the Patal dam of a large farmer in Solai breaks. A nearby shopping center and the sprawling Nyakinyua farm on the edge of the dam are flooded. At least 48 people are killed and several people are still missing.

The previous major shareholder of Flikpkart was the Japanese investor Masayoshi Son , co-owner of the telecommunications and media group Softbank .
- Wanlaweyne / Somalia : At least five people are killed and 10 injured in an attack on a khat market.

- Kennedy Space Center / United States : The space company SpaceX uses a Falcon 9 rocket to put Bangladesh's first satellite ( Bangabandhu 1 ) on a geostationary transfer orbit , and the first stage successfully lands on the drone ship Of Course I Still Love You .
- Stuttgart / Germany : ARD , the association of public broadcasters , announces that a visa from Russia applied for by journalist and anti- doping expert Hajo Seppelt from Südwestrundfunk (SWR) on the occasion of reporting on the 2018 World Cup has been declared invalid because Seppelt was on the "list of undesirable people". - Hamburg / Germany : As the last founding member of the Bundesliga , Hamburger SV is relegated from the Bundesliga as the top division for the first time after 55 seasons .
- Lisbon / Portugal : The singer Netta Barzilai wins the 63rd Eurovision Song Contest with the title Toy for Israel .
- Paris / France : In an Islamist attack near the Théâtre des Bouffes-Parisiens in the 2nd arrondissement, a Chechen assassin stabbed one person and injured four others before being shot by police officers.

- Jalalabad / Afghanistan : At least 15 people are killed and 42 other people injured in an attack on the financial administration of the provincial capital of Nangarhar . Heavy fighting broke out between security forces and assassins.
- Surabaya / Indonesia : Attacks in front of Christian churches claimed by the terrorist organization Islamic State (IS) kill at least 13 trade fair visitors immediately before the Catholic morning mass in the Santa Maria Church (Gereja Katolik Santa Maria Tak Bercela, SMTB) in Jalan Ngagel Madya 44 more injured. Other attack sites are the Free Evangelical Diponegoro Church (Gereja Kristen Indonesia, GKI) and a church of the Pentecostal movement (Gereja Pantekosta Pusat Surabaya, GPPS).

- Barcelona / Spain : The separatist politician Joaquim "Quim" Torra is elected by the regional parliament as the new Prime Minister of the government of Catalonia.
- Brussels / Belgium : The Council of the European Union decides to regionalize its CSDP missions EUCAP Sahel Mali , EUCAP Sahel Niger and EUTM Mali in order to strengthen cross-border cooperation in the Sahel region . He then kills the two policewomen and then the waiting driver and student Cyril Vangriecke. The attacker then takes hostage a woman who works as a cleaner in a nearby school and holed up. Several are injured in a shootout with the officers. Thereupon the perpetrator is shot down and killed by the special police unit Peloton anti-banditisme (PAB). He is also charged with the murder of his former prison inmate Michael Wilmet. The Islamic State committed itself to the act.
