  • Cairo / Egypt : President Abd al-Fattah as-Sisi has ratified a law regulating social networks . In the future, social media accounts on the Internet with more than 5000 followers, for example on Facebook and Twitter, will be monitored by the Supreme Council for Media Regulation (SCMR).
  • Damasak / Nigeria : Alleged fighters of the Islamist militia Islamic State in West Africa (ISWA) attack a military base in the town of Zari near the border with Niger . According to the military spokesman for the 2nd Nigerian Division, which is deployed against the Islamists as part of Operation Lafiya Dole, the attacks were successfully repulsed. The AFP news agency reports that 30 armed forces soldiers have been killed .
  • Mezzeh / Syria : There are several explosions early in the morning at the Syrian air force base Mezzeh southwest of Damascus . The Syrian news agency SANA reports on a short circuit in an ammunition depot on the base as the trigger for the detonations. At least two military personnel are killed and 11 other people are injured. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), based in Great Britain, does not rule out another missile attack by the Israeli armed forces .
  • Mogadishu / Somalia : At least five people are killed in a car bomb attack on a restaurant in the capital. Another car bomb attack on a police station in the suburb of Afoye kills five police officers and seven civilians. The security forces kill two of the attackers. The Islamist Al-Shabaab militia is committed to the attacks.
  • Tripoli / Libya : During the last week of heavy fighting between rival militias in the capital, around 400 prisoners fled the Ain-Sara prison. The prisoners are criminals and supporters of the former revolutionary leader Muammar al-Gaddafi . On August 31, the Ministry of Health reported at least 39 deaths. The Tripoli International Airport was also closed due to rocket attacks. In the evening the capital was under rocket fire. The Waddan Hotel near the Italian embassy and a diesel depot of the state oil company National Oil Corporation were also hit . There are also fights between the 7th Infantry Brigade and the Tripoli Revolutionary Brigades (TRB) and the Al-Nawasi Brigade in the city of Tarhuna, 65 kilometers southeast of the capital.

  • Basra / Iraq : Insurgents storm the Iranian consulate and set it on fire. Iraqi security forces fired shots to disperse the protests. The protesters are demanding jobs, clean drinking water and a secure electricity supply. On September 6, other buildings such as the provincial government were set on fire. At least nine people died in the riot within a week and 93 others were injured, including 18 security guards.
  • Como / Italy : When a theater is being demolished, workers discover a stone amphora from the fifth century AD with 300 gold coins in a wall. Opened in 1807 and closed in 1997, the Teatro Cressoni was located near the site of the former forum of the Roman city of Novum Comum.
  • Koya / Iraq : The Iranian armed forces attack the headquarters of the Democratic Party Kurdistan-Iran (PDKI / KDPI) in the Kurdistan Autonomous Region in northern Iraq around 60 km east of Arbil with Katyusha rocket launchers . At least 11 people are killed and 30 injured.
  • Luanda / Angola : Former President José Eduardo dos Santos is saying goodbye to the political stage after almost 40 years in power. At the party conference of the ruling Movimento Popular de Libertação de Angola (MPLA), he hands over the leadership of the party to President João Lourenço, who has been in office since September 2017 .
  • Qamishli / Syria : In Qamishli on the border with Turkey there is heavy fighting between the Syrian armed forces and the Kurdish People's Defense Units (YPG). According to Kurdish information, seven YPG fighters and 11 Syrian soldiers are killed. A convoy of the Syrian army was attacked on the way around Qamishli airport .
  • Gudauta / Georgia : The Prime Minister of the internationally unrecognized Republic of Abkhazia in Georgia, Gennadi Gagulija , was killed on the coastal highway in a car accident with his convoy near the town of Myussera in Gudauta Rajon.
