Only 34 percent instead of the required 50 percent of the 1.8 million eligible voters cast their votes. However, the referendum was not binding on the social democratic government of Prime Minister Zoran Zaev ( SDSM ). President Gjorge Ivanov had spoken out against the referendum and the country's name change.
