The Basra International Airport ( Arabic مطار البصرة الدولي Maṭār al-Baṣra ad-duwalī ) is the second largest international airport in Iraq and is located in the southern city of Basra .

history

construction

The airport was built in the 1980s and then developed into a gateway to Iraq's only seaport in the 1980s under Saddam Hussein . This second phase of development was completed in spring 1988 by a purely consortium consisting of STRABAG SE , Bilfinger + Berger and Universale . -> The airport is located near the city center of Basra on Shatt-Al-Arab. The new airfield is located approx. 15 kilometers west of the city center. Iraqi Airways operated regular flights to and from Baghdad (before the outbreak of the war with Kuwait).

renovation

The renovation of the airport should continue with a new terminal by a German company, but the outbreak of the second Gulf War in 1991 put an end to this project. In fact, the airport's development only happened after the 2003 Iraq invasion.

Some facilities were renovated as part of the United States Agency for International Development . The project is broadly based and includes the construction of a tower and other navigation systems as well as the construction of transport and communication systems.

The airport reopened in June 2005. The event was celebrated with the sacrifice of a sheep than a Boeing 727 of the Iraqi Airways landed in Baghdad. That was the beginning of the airline between Baghdad and Basra. Even so, many passengers complained about the lack of basic facilities. There were problems with the air conditioning and toilets.

The reconstruction of the airport is in progress to improve the facilities. Iraqi Airways already uses this airport and has its second center here. The city is considered safer than Baghdad and Iraqi Airways hopes to operate overseas flights from here. You have applied for a slot at London Heathrow Airport to start flight operations soon.

The airport is currently in the process of civilization and is part of the rebuilding of the country by Operation Telic of the multinational forces in Iraq. Even so, there will continue to be a significant Royal Air Force presence .
