The Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan , or DPK-I for short ( Kurdish : Partiya Demokratîk a Kurdistana Îranê , English Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan , formerly: Democratic Party of Kurdistan-Iran ), is a social democratic Kurdish party in Iran . She has been a full member of the Socialist International since 2015 . The party calls for a democratic and federal Iran. In 2006 a part split off under the old name Democratic Party of Kurdistan-Iran .

history

The DPK-I was founded on August 16, 1946 under the name of the Democratic Party of Kurdistan in Mahabad as the successor party to the Komalay Ziyanaway Kurd (“Council for the Kurdish Rebirth”). However, to confusion with the Iraqi Kurdish Democratic Party of Mustafa Barzani exclude, was later added the "I" as an abbreviation for Iran.

The party established the government of the short-lived Republic of Mahabad . Its chairman at the time was Qazi Mohammed .

The party organized some minor uprisings, but after the coup against Mohammad Mossadegh's government in 1953, the party went underground.

After the Islamic revolution in 1979 , the DPK-I negotiated with the Khomeini regime about autonomy. However, the government denied the party's demands and Khomeini even issued fatwas against the party. What then followed was a war in the Kurdish cities that brought a lot of suffering and destruction. For example, on September 3, 1979, after other cities had been attacked, Mahabad was bombed by the Iranian army.

In the First Gulf War between 1980 and 1988, Saddam Hussein supported the party in order to weaken Tehran . However, Tehran did the same with the Iraqi Kurds.

On July 13, 1989, chairman Abdul Rahman Ghassemlou was murdered by agents at a meeting with representatives of the Iranian government in Vienna . His successor Sadegh Scharafkandi was also shot on September 17, 1992 during negotiations in Berlin ( Mykonos assassination ).

In 2006 part of the party split off because of disputes over the election of the chairman of the 13th Congress and formed under the old name Democratic Party of Kurdistan-Iran.

Today the party maintains camps in northern Iraq. Since 2007 the party has represented the Iranian Kurds in the Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization .
