Somerset West (English) or Somerset-Wes ( Afrikaans ) is a city in the Western Cape Province of South Africa . It is part of the metropolitan municipality City of Capetown . In 2011 it had 55,166 inhabitants.
Somerset West was named after Lord Charles Henry Somerset in 1819 , who was governor of the British Cape Colony at the time. The addition West was added to distinguish it from Somerset East , a city in what is now the Eastern Cape Province .
Somerset West is located on False Bay , bounded in the north by the Hottentots- Holland Mountains at the foot of the Helderberg around 50 kilometers east of the center of Cape Town on the N2 motorway and the Eersterivier – Protem / Bredasdorp railway . It is the commercial and residential center of the entire Helderberg area.
The wind from the Atlantic, called South Easter or The Cape Doctor , ensures a pleasant climate in the summer months from December to March.
In the village located Helderberg College , an educational institution of the Seventh-day Adventist Church .

In Somerset West, near Macassar , there is an industrial site (formerly Somchem , 34 ° 3 '54.2 " S , 18 ° 46' 37.7" O ) for products for domestic and foreign ammunition demand , the former exclusively for state defense group Denel belonged and since 2008 has been producing the majority under the Rheinmetall Group division Rheinmetall Denel Munition (RDM) based in South Africa .
