Somerset East ( Afrikaans : Somerset-Oos ) is a town in the Blue Crane Route municipality , Sarah Baartman District , Eastern Cape Province in South Africa . It is 180 kilometers from Port Elizabeth . The city is also the seat of the local government. In 2011 it had, together with the township of KwaNojoli, 18,825 inhabitants.

The first settlement under the name Somerset took place here in 1815 to produce fodder for the horses of the British cavalry . The present city itself was founded in 1825 by Lord Charles Henry Somerset ; It received city rights in 1837. To avoid confusion with Somerset West , the name was later added East .

    • Shortly after the city was founded, the Methodist missionaries were given a piece of land to build a chapel and a cemetery. Shortly after the completion of the chapel in 1828, the chapel and the property belonging to it became the property of the Dutch Reformed Church . In 1835 the chapel became a rectory. The building became a museum in 1975 on the city's 150th birthday.
