Ivan Mitford-Barberton was a descendant of several families who were among the first British settlers in South Africa in 1820. He did his school education in Grahamstown . When he was twelve years old, his family moved to Kenya , where he came into contact with African and Arabic motifs that would later play an important role in his work. From 1915 to 1918 he served as a soldier in East Africa. From 1919 to 1922 he studied at the Grahamstown School of Art , and from 1923 at the Royal College of Art in London , under Henry Moore and Derwent Wood. During this time he traveled to France and Italy. In 1927 he returned to South Africa and opened a studio there.

He designed the Jock of the Bushveld memorial in Barberton , a place his ancestors helped found. In the 1930s he designed parts of the exterior and interior decoration of the Mutual Building (now Mutual Heights ) in Cape Town, completed in 1939 , which at that time was the tallest building in Africa at 91 meters ( apart from the pyramids ). The outer facade was equipped with a 120 meter long granite frieze and nine, four meter high figures. The bronze statue of the Hout Bay Leopard in a district of Cape Town where he lived is also his work.
From 1947 to 1961 Ivan Mitford-Barberton was a member of the Royal Society of British Sculptors , from 1957 to 1961 a fellow of the society and a member of the Cape Town Theosophical Lodge .
