West Somerset was a district ( English district ) in the county of Somerset in England . There were two administrative centers, Minehead Town and Williton Village ; other important places were Dulverton and Watchet .

The district was formed on April 1, 1974 and resulted from the merger of the urban districts Minehead and Watchet and the rural districts of Dulverton and Williton. Due to an ordinance issued in May 2018, West Somerset was merged with Taunton Deane to the southeast to form the new District Somerset West and Taunton on April 1, 2019 .
