Taunton Deane was a district ( English district ) with the title of a borough in the county of Somerset in England . The administrative seat was the city of Taunton , in which more than half of the population lives. The next smaller significant place was Wellington .
The district was formed on April 1, 1974 and was created by the merger of the Municipal Borough Taunton, the Urban District Wellington and the Rural Districts Taunton and Wellington. Due to an ordinance issued in May 2018, Taunton Deane was merged with the north-west bordering West Somerset on April 1, 2019 to form the new District Somerset West and Taunton .
