Gennadi Leonidovich Gagulija ( Russian Геннадий Леонидович Гагулия , Abkhaz Геннадии Леонид-иҧа Гагәлиа Gennadii Leonid-ipa Gagwlia * 4 January 1948 in Lychny at Gudauta , Abkhaz ASSR , Georgian SSR , Soviet Union , † 8. September 2018 near Mysra / Miussera , Republic Abkhazia , Georgia ) was an Abkhazian politician . From 1995 to 1997, 2002 to 2003 and from April 2018 until his death he was Prime Minister of the internationally unrecognized Republic of Abkhazia .

Life

Gennady Gagulija studied from 1966 to 1972 at the Faculty of Construction of the Belarusian Technical University in Minsk and was a civil engineer by profession . From 1972 to 1974 he worked at the Pizundastroi plant in Gudauta. He then worked as a chief engineer in another construction company. From 1977 he was the deputy director of a restaurant on Lake Riza . In 1991 Gagulija began his political activity as chairman of the State Committee for Foreign Trade at the Council of Ministers of the Abkhaz ASSR. From November 1992 he was Deputy Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Abkhazia and from 1995 to 1997 head of government for the first time. After his resignation, for which he had given health reasons, he was among other things an employee of a member of the Russian State Duma and chairman of the Abkhaz Chamber of Commerce and Industry. From 2002 to 2003 he was again Prime Minister of Abkhazia and then head of the Abkhaz presidential office. In June 2004 he resigned from this office. Differences between him and the then President Wladislaw Ardsinba about his successor were assumed to be the reason . Gagulija was most recently head of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry again.

The interior ministry of the unrecognized "Republic of Abkhazia" reported that Gagulija died in a traffic accident on the evening of September 8, 2018. His car crashed into another car. Gagulija suffered a fractured skull base and died on the way to the hospital. Gagulija's driver and bodyguard were only slightly injured and were allowed to leave the hospital the next day. There was also a car with President Raul Hadschimba in the motorcade . According to the "Republic", he was not injured.
