Lake Riza ( Abkhazian Риҵа ; Georgian რიწა; Russian Рица ) is a lake in Abkhazia on the southern flank of the northwestern Greater Caucasus .
The water surface of the lake covers an area of 1.5 km², the maximum depth is about 116 m and the length of the shoreline is 4.29 km. The main tributary is the Laschipsa . The lake is drained by the rivers Iupschara , Gega and Bsipi to the Black Sea .
The lake is located in a forest landscape, largely untouched by humans, at an altitude of 950 m , in the middle of the Caucasus mountains 2200 to 3500 meters high . On the north bank of Lake Riza, Josef Stalin had a summer residence (dacha) built and spent many summers there, which is now owned by the Abkhaz state. There he made the decision in 1931 to subordinate Abkhazia or the Abkhazian Soviet Socialist Republic as the Abkhaz Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic to Georgia or the Georgian Soviet Socialist Republic .
The Riza nature reserve was founded in 1930 to protect the unique mountain landscape and preserve it for posterity. The reserve occupies an area of 16,289 hectares . Salmon species of the Coregonus genus are caught in the lake .
