In the late Middle Ages and the early modern period, the Broich rule was a subordinate rule of the Duchy of Berg . It was abolished in 1806. The Lords of Broich had their residence at Broich Castle . There is no tribal relationship to the Jülich family of von Broich .

The rule coincided with the parish and the Mülheim office and roughly comprised the present-day districts of Alstaden , Styrum , Dümpten , Heißen , Speldorf , Broich , Altstadt I , Altstadt II , Menden and Holthausen , Fulerum , Haarzopf and Saarn , with the latter being Mintard and Selbeck are to be excluded, which belonged to the ducal office of Angermund .

The rule bordered on the Duchy of Kleve , the territories of the Imperial Monastery of Essen and the Imperial Abbey of Werden, as well as the Duchy of Berg itself. Within the rule was the Cistercian monastery of Saarn and, as an enclave, the imperial rule of Styrum , located in southern Styrum and northern Speldorf and Broich and had Styrum Castle as their residence .

Apparently, Clarisse de Brouch married a daughter of Dietrich III. von Broich in the Luxembourg family Meysembourg. Clarisse and her husband Wauthier de Meysembourg had a son named Thierry sire de Brouch , knight, approx. 1270-1304, who carried the coat of arms of the noble lords of Broich.
