The Belarusian National Technical University ( BNTU ; Belarusian Беларускі нацыянальны тэхнічны універсітэт Belaruski Nazyjalny Technitschny Uniwersitet , Russian Белорусский национальный технический университет Belorusski Nazionalnyj Technitscheski Uniwersitet ) is the leading technical university in the Republic of Belarus . In addition to technical professions, economists, architects and teachers are trained in its 103 departments.

history

It is the university today the oldest higher education institution in Belarus. Shores Iwanowitsch Alfjorow , Nobel Prize Laureate in Physics, studied at what is now BNTU from 1947. In 1991 the Polytechnic Institute was transformed into the National Polytechnic Academy and in 1997 it was officially recognized as the leading engineering institution of the Republic of Belarus (decision of the Council of Ministers of January 17, 1997). On April 1, 2002, the university received its current name and status. In the same year, new departments for natural resources and environmental protection as well as for technology management and humanities were introduced. In 2003 the Faculty of Military Technology was added. Today the BNTU offers 72 courses in 15 faculties (as of 2004).

students life

At the BNTU there is the possibility of studying full-time, part-time or in a correspondence course. The study to the first degree, corresponding to a Bachelor of Science, takes five years. Afterwards there is the possibility to do the Magistratur (Master of Science) in a further year and to study further in the Aspirantur .

The university has 17 student residences in the vicinity of the main building. The university library has a collection of over two million works. In addition, the BNTU has a computer center, a center for theater and art, a stadium, a tennis court, a swimming pool and several sports halls. Like other Belarusian universities, it also has its own sanatoriums in different parts of the country, where students and staff can go on vacation.

International cooperation

Since 1960, more than 5000 international students from Europe, Asia, Africa and Latin America have graduated from BNTU. In 2003/2004, 450 foreign students were enrolled at the BNTU, most of them from Turkmenistan and the People's Republic of China . The first international student association of the Republic of Belarus was founded here in 1997. Foreign students usually attend a one-year preparatory course in which, in addition to Russian, they also take mathematics , physics and other technical subjects. After passing the exam at the end of this course, you can start regular studies, the language of instruction is Russian.

The information center of the German Academic Exchange Service in Belarus is located at the BNTU . This supports the German-Belarusian university cooperation and offers Belarusian students and scientists the opportunity to study or research in Germany. In addition, the BNTU participates in international programs such as TEMPUS, COPERNICUS and UNESCO programs . There are partnerships with 64 universities abroad.
