Ülo Nugis (born April 28, 1944 in Tallinn ; † November 18, 2011 ) was an Estonian politician .

Life

Ülo Nugis attended Central School No. 17 in Tallinn until 1958, and from 1962 the Higher Technical School for Construction and Mechanics there. He graduated from the Belarusian Polytechnic Institute (now Belarusian National Technical University ) in Minsk in 1967 with a degree in mechanical engineering .

From 1967 to 1974 Ülo Nugis was an engineer in various Soviet companies. From 1974 he was director of the “Baudetail” factory, 1980 to 1986 of the ski manufacturer “Dünamo” and 1986 to 1990 general director of the production group “Estoplast”. From 1988 to 1991, Ülo Nugis was the chairman of the Estonian Work Collective Association (Eesti Töökollektiivide Liit) .

Shortly before Estonian regained independence, Ülo Nugis went into politics. In 1990 he was a member of the Estonian Committee, the democratic counter-government to the communist government of the Estonian SSR . From 1990 to 1992 he was a member and chairman of the Supreme Council of the Republic of Estonia. On August 20, 1991 at 11:03 p.m., during the August coup in Moscow, he officially proclaimed the state separation of Estonia from the Soviet Union.

From 1992 to 2003 Ülo Nugis was a member of the Estonian Parliament ( Riigikogu ). From October 21, 1992 to March 21, 1995 he was President of the Estonian Parliament.

After leaving Parliament, he worked in the private sector.

Ülo Nugis was married and had a son.
