Sergei Shamba

Sergei Shamba ( Abkhaz Сергеи Мирон-иҧа Шамба / Sergei Miron-ipa Shamba, Russian Сергей Миронович Шамба / Sergei Mironovich Shamba; * 15. March 1951 in Gudauta , Abkhaz ASSR , Soviet Union ) is an Abkhaz politician and former Prime Minister of the internationally by only a few States recognized Republic of Abkhazia .

Sergei Shamba studied at the History Faculty of the Tbilisi Pedagogical University in Soviet times . In the last few years before the collapse of the Soviet Union, he was active in the growing Abkhazian national movement. Until February 1992 he headed the ethnopolitical organization “Aidgylara” as chairman. During the armed conflict between the Abkhazian separatists and the central government in Tbilisi in 1992 and 1993, Shamba was Deputy Defense Minister of the Republic of Abkhazia, which declared itself independent in July 1992. In 1997 he was appointed Foreign Minister. At the same time he did his doctorate until 1998 at the Archaeological Institute in Yerevan on the subject of the political, socio-economic and cultural situation of ancient and medieval Abkhazia on the basis of findings from archeology and numismatics . Shamba was co-chairman of the Amzachara party at the time . In June 2004, he resigned in protest at the murder of Garri Aiba , the second party leader, and ran for head of state in the 2004 presidential election. With almost 7% of the vote, he was eliminated in the first ballot. Under the newly elected President Sergei Bagapsch , Shamba was again foreign minister in December of the same year. On February 13, 2010 he was appointed Prime Minister by Bagapsch.

In August 2011, Shambi ran for the presidential post and finished second behind Alexander Ankwab with 21 percent of the vote .

Sergei Schamba is married and has a son and a daughter.
