- Druid Hills / United States : The US health authority CDC reports that a total of 197 EHEC cases (strain O157: H7) from contaminated romaine lettuce have occurred in 35 US states . Five of the sick died (one each in California, Arkansas and New York; two in Minnesota).
- Madrid / Spain : The lower house of the Spanish parliament expresses its distrust of Mariano Rajoy ( PP ) and instead elects Pedro Sánchez ( PSOE ) as prime minister .
- Minneapolis / United States : The Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis agrees with around 450 victims of sexual abuse by 91 priests in the diocese over the past few decades on a payment of 210 million US dollars from a fund. At the same time, the bankruptcy proceedings of the archdiocese threatened with bankruptcy are to be financed.
- Rome / Italy : President Sergio Mattarella swears in the entire government from the Five Star Movement and Lega Nord under the leadership of the independent lawyer Giuseppe Conte . - Barcelona / Spain : In Catalonia , the new regional government of the Generalitat de Catalunya is inaugurated under its President Quim Torra and the forced administration is lifted under the central government in Madrid. The new regional government is still committed to independence from Spain and the goal is "an independent state in the form of a republic".

- Flensburg / Germany : The SG Flensburg-Handewitt has won the German handball championship for the second time since 2004 .
- Kerkenna Islands / Tunisia : At least 46 people die in a boat accident with around 180 migrants on board. 67 people can be saved by the Coast Guard. The boat was allegedly used for towing . Another refugee boat sank off the Turkish coast of Antalya province . At least nine people were killed. Five could be saved.
- Ljubljana / Slovenia : In the parliamentary elections , the conservative SDS under Janez Janša is the strongest party with around 25 percent of the vote, ahead of the LMŠ, newly founded by Marjan Šarec , with 12.7 percent. The liberal SMC and the incumbent Prime Minister Miro Cerar suffered considerable losses and came to 9.8 percent, the social democratic SD 9.9 percent and the socialist ZL 9.3 percent.
- Lodwar / Kenya : In Turkana County , for the first time after the successful exploration of the Nagmbia 8 oil field near Lokichar in 2012, in the presence of President Uhuru Kenyatta , the first oil transport on tank trucks to the oil terminal in the port of Mombasa . So far, around 2000 barrels of oil per day have been extracted.
- Antigua Guatemala / Guatemala : After the eruption of the Volcán de Fuego (fire volcano), at least 62 people died and around 300 were injured. More than 2000 people had to be evacuated from the area around the volcano.

- Antananarivo / Madagascar : Prime Minister Olivier Mahafaly Solonandrasana resigns. The UN representative of Madagascar Christian Ntsay has been appointed by President Hery Rajaonarimampianina as the new Prime Minister of a transitional government .
- Goma / Democratic Republic of the Congo : After several fatal incidents and kidnappings in the past few months, the Virunga National Park in the province of North Kivu on the border with Rwanda and Uganda will remain closed to tourists until the end of 2018.
- Kabul / Afghanistan : At least eight people are killed in a suicide attack on a meeting of around 2,000 ʿUlamā ' , Islamic religious scholars in front of a tent of the Loja Jirga , the traditional council of elders near the Kabul Polytechnic University in the north-west of the city.
- Redmond / United States : The US software and hardware group Microsoft announces the takeover of GitHub , an online service that provides software development projects on its servers ( file hosting ), for around 7.5 billion US dollars.
- Sydney , Australia : The Commonwealth Bank of Australia agreed to pay a fine of A700 million Australian dollars ($ 530 million) for violating anti-money laundering and terrorist financing laws. 53,000 transactions were affected, with banking transactions over 10,000 Australian dollars that were not reported to the authorities.

- Berlin / Germany : The Federal Government is setting up a Commission for Growth, Structural Change and Employment (“Coal Commission”), which is to develop a plan for the phase- out of coal by the end of 2018 as part of climate protection policy .
- Berlin / Germany : The federal government is setting up a “Reliable Intergenerational Contract ” (VGV) commission to develop recommendations for future-proof and generational provision for old age. This includes the sustainable security and further development of statutory pension insurance , company pension schemes and private pension schemes . The chairmen of the commission are Gabriele Lösekrug-Möller (SPD) and Karl Schiewerling (CDU).
- Menlo Park / California : According to research by the New York Times, Facebook contracted data from two billion users to 60 companies, including Chinese companies.

- Leverkusen / Germany : With the takeover of the US agrochemical company Monsanto, the pharmaceutical and agrochemical group Bayer AG completes the largest acquisition in its history as well as the largest takeover of a foreign company by a German one, making it the world market leader in crop protection products and seeds.
- Menlo Park / California : Facebook announced that private messages from 14 million users were accidentally displayed publicly over several days.

- New York City : The UN General Assembly has Belgium , Germany , the Dominican Republic , Indonesia and South Africa for 2019 and 2020 in the UN Security Council voted.
- Washington, DC / United States : The International Monetary Fund is granting Argentina a stand-by loan of US $ 50 billion with a term of three years to strengthen the economy. In return, the government of President Mauricio Macri pledged to significantly reduce the budget deficit.

Besides the 61-year-old Barros, the bishops had already reached the retirement age of 75 years. After numerous cases of sexual abuse , 34 Chilean bishops initially offered to resign. In both Greece and Macedonia, parliament has yet to approve the agreement. In Macedonia, a referendum is also planned for autumn 2018. Greece could thus give up the blockade of a possible accession to NATO and the European Union (EU).

- New York City / United States : The United Nations General Assembly voted by a large majority to condemn Israel for the recent violence in the Gaza Strip . Out of 193 countries, 120 voted for the resolution. Eight countries voted against and there were 45 abstentions. In the months before, violent clashes had occurred on the border between Israel and the Gaza Strip. According to Palestinian sources, more than 120 people have been killed by Israeli soldiers there since the end of March 2018. Thousands were injured.

- The Hague / Netherlands : The Dutch Foreign Ministry announces the withdrawal from the Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission of the United Nations in Mali (MINUSMA) on May 1, 2019, in which it is currently still involved with 250 soldiers. Instead, the mission in Afghanistan will be "expanded and intensified".
- Geneva / Switzerland : The World Health Organization (WHO) includes online gaming disorder in the new ICD-11 catalog of the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems .
- Washington, DC / United States : The US government is imposing additional tariffs on the People's Republic of China of 25 percent on around 1102 Chinese products and product groups amounting to 50 billion US dollars. However, consumer goods such as smartphones or TVs are expressly excluded. This is justified with the high trade deficit with the People's Republic of China of around 375 billion US dollars. The tariffs are due to come into force on July 6, 2018.

- Dallas / United States : The US telecommunications group AT&T is merging for around 85 billion US dollars with the US media company Time Warner , to which u. a. - Glasgow / United Kingdom : The Scottish art academy Glasgow School of Art is again badly damaged in another fire. The restoration of the fire damage in May 2014 already cost the equivalent of around 40 million euros. There were no injuries.
- Kiel / Germany : Beginning of the 136th Kiel Week as a folk festival with the annual sailing regatta and windjammer parade in the Kiel Fjord as well as visits to numerous warships at the Kiel naval base .
- Beijing / People's Republic of China : In response to the US tariffs on Chinese products, the country is also announcing additional tariffs of 25 percent on around 545 US products and product groups amounting to 34 billion US dollars. The tariffs, like those of the USA, are due to come into force on July 6, 2018.
- Vienna / Austria : According to an investigative research of the Austrian newspapers Der Standard und Profil , the German Federal Intelligence Service (BND) is said to have systematically monitored the telecommunications of central facilities in Austria between 1999 and 2006. - Psarades / Greece : The governments of Greece and Macedonia reach an agreement to settle the dispute over the name of Macedonia that has been going on since the breakup of Yugoslavia . According to this, the former Yugoslav republic of Macedonia is to be called North Macedonia in future. In return, Greece no longer wants to block the country's path to NATO and the EU .

Russia's Deputy UN Ambassador Dmitri Polyansky referred to the OSCE's existing mediation efforts in the Transnistrian conflict, and the resolution is damaging the efforts of the OSCE.

- Abu Kamal / Syria : F-16 fighters of the Iraqi Air Force attack a meeting of fighters of the Islamic State (IS) in Hajin in the Abu Kamal district in southeast Syria . According to Iraqi sources, at least 45 IS fighters were killed.
- Ankara / Turkey : presidential and parliamentary elections .
- Brussels / Belgium : Informal working meeting on refugee policy of the European Union in which Belgium, Bulgaria, Denmark, Germany, France, Greece, Italy, Malta, the Netherlands, Austria and Spain take part. Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary canceled their participation.
- Riyadh / Saudi Arabia : Women are officially allowed to drive motor vehicles after the ban has been lifted , including motorcycles, but bicycles only to a very limited extent.

A regulation for the distribution of migrants from Africa and Asia to the member states is not within reach; the principle of voluntary admission is emphasized.
