Carlo Cottarelli (* 1954 in Cremona ) is an Italian economist .

Life

Carlo Cottarelli holds degrees in Economics and Banking from the University of Siena and a Masters in Economics from the London School of Economics . From 1981 to 1987 worked in the policy department of Banca d'Italia and from 1987 to 1988 for the energy company Eni .

From September 1988 to November 2013 Cottarelli worked in various positions for the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Most recently, he was Director of the Fiscal Affairs Department from November 2008 and was responsible for the publication of the IMF publication Fiscal Monitor . From November 2013 onwards, he was the special representative for the Letta Cabinet for auditing public administration and corporate expenditure. In November 2014 he was nominated by the Renzi cabinet as managing director of the IMF. Since the end of October 2017, he has been overseeing the auditing of the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Milan .

On May 28, 2018, eight weeks after the parliamentary elections and the subsequent failure of the formation of a government , Cottarelli was commissioned by President Sergio Mattarella to form a transitional government . Three days later, on May 31, 2018, Cottarelli returned the government contract to Mattarella after the formation of a government between the five-star movement and the Lega became apparent in the second attempt .
