Life

Iván Duque is the son of Iván Duque Escobar, born in Gómez Plata , Departamento de Antioquia , also a lawyer and politician, and Juliana Márquez Tono, born in Ibagué , Departamento del Tolima . He studied law at the private Catholic University Sergio Arboleda and at the American University and Georgetown University , Washington, DC , with Master -Abschlüssen in finance, public administration and international law . In the 2018 election campaign, Duque advertised with a résumé that included attending courses at Harvard Business School as a further qualification.

Before entering the Senate in 2014 (after the parliamentary elections on March 9, 2014), Duque was head of the Department for Culture, Creativity and Solidarity at the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), where he worked in many projects for social responsibility, youth, creative industries and culture was responsible.

Iván Duque is a political protégé and confidante of the former President Álvaro Uribe Vélez . In the runoff election for president on June 17, 2018 against Gustavo Petro , the first leftist candidate to win a runoff, he received 54.76% of the votes cast.

He is married to the lawyer María Juliana Ruiz, with whom he has two daughters and a son.

Positions

Duque criticizes the peace agreement between the rebel organization FARC and the Colombian state . The agreement negotiated by his predecessor Juan Manuel Santos had ended the decades-long conflict in the country. Duque wanted to have it changed in essential points, but did not get permission from the Constitutional Court.

In mid-February 2019, during a visit by German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier to Colombia , Duque described the policy of the Nicolás Maduro government not to let any relief goods into Venezuela as a “crime against humanity” and, in his opinion, “all necessary measures” must be taken to stop the " genocide in Venezuela".
