The Democratic Center ( Spanish Centro Democrático ) is a right-wing conservative Colombian party . The party was founded in 2013 and sees itself as an active force in the continuation of the policies of former President Álvaro Uribe Vélez .

Origin and goals

In the development process of the new party, the Centro Democrático supporters, members and several dissidents gathered Colombian Conservative Party and the Partido de la U around. Citizens of different political origins, liberals, conservatives, from left-wing democratic movements and non-party people who were concerned about the present and future of Colombia. According to the party manifesto, the political focus is on "sticking to the work of former President Álvaro Uribe and the conviction that the country must advance on the path to democratic security, investor confidence and social cohesion, state austerity and public dialogue" .

The party calls itself centrist , although it is classified by the public in the political spectrum as politically right . On July 15, 2014, it was officially constituted as a political party with 20 seats in the Senate and 19 representatives in parliament, which it received during the 2014 elections . It became the most important opposition party in Colombia and thus the main opponent of President Juan Manuel Santos . In its platform, the Centro Democrático declares itself to be the only and most important opposition to the peace process that was signed between the government and the FARC .

In the parliamentary elections in Colombia in 2014 , the party won 20 senatorial seats in the Senate of Colombia and 19 seats in the House of Representatives of Colombia . Four years later, in the parliamentary elections on March 11, 2018 , the party won 19 senatorial seats in the Senate of Colombia and 32 MPs in the Colombian House of Representatives .
