General election in Colombia 2014
The 2014 parliamentary elections in Colombia took place on March 9, 2014.
32.8 million voters were asked to elect 102 senators for the Senate and 166 representatives and the House of Representatives , the upper and lower houses of the Colombian parliament . The turnout of almost 43.58 percent was roughly on par with previous congressional elections.
The Partido Social de Unidad Nacional led by President Juan Manuel Santos emerged from the elections as the strongest party . Nevertheless, his party lost more than 20 percent of its seats in the nationally elected and politically more important Senate and in the House of Representatives, which represents the regions, compared to the 2010 election . The only winner is the right-wing conservative political movement Centro Democrático of the former President Álvaro Uribe Vélez (2002–2010), who was at the top of his electoral list and made it into the Senate. It became the second largest group in Congress and fourth largest in the House of Representatives. In the capital Bogotá, which traditionally votes on the left, it even became the strongest force.
