The Kandil Mountains are a region on Iraqi territory in the Erbil Governorate near the Iraqi-Iranian border about 100 km south of Turkey. The region is part of the Zāgros Mountains and is difficult to access. The highest peaks reach more than 3,000 meters, with the highest mountain Kuhe Haji Ebrahim on the Iranian - Iraqi border reaching 3,587 m.
The area gains its importance from its function as a retreat for the PKK and its Iranian sub-organization, the Party for a Free Life in Kurdistan (“Partiya Jiyana Azad a Kurdistanê”, abbreviated PJAK). These organizations control an area of around 50 km². In recent years the area has been attacked several times by the Turkish Air Force and Iranian artillery.
