Omar Ahmad Munif ar-Razzaz ( Arabic عمر احمد منيف الرزاز, DMG ʿUmar Aḥmad Munīf ar-Razzāz ; born January 1, 1960 in Amman ) is a Jordanian politician . He has been Prime Minister of the country since June 5, 2018 .

Life

ar-Razzaz is the son of Munif ar-Razzaz , a general secretary of the socialist Ba'ath party in Jordan, and the brother of the writer and Ba'ath co-founder Muʾnis ar-Razzaz, who died in 2002 . He graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) with a Masters Degree and graduated from Harvard University with a Ph.D. in Urban Planning , Public Policy and Economics in 1991. He completed postgraduate studies at Harvard Law School .

From 2002 to 2006 ar-Razzaz headed the World Bank branch in Lebanon , then until 2010 the Jordanian social security. He was also the director of the economic think tank Jordan Strategy Forum and the Jordanian subsidiary of the Qatari Ahli Bank .

From January 14, 2017, the non-party Omar ar-Razzaz acted as Jordan’s Minister of Education in the cabinet of Prime Minister Hani al-Mulki . After his resignation on June 4, 2018 due to days of massive popular protests against austerity measures, tax increases and price increases, King Abdullah II appointed ar-Razzaz as al-Mulki's successor on June 5.
