The 101st German Catholic Day took place from May 9th to 13th, 2018 in Münster . The Katholikentag was hosted by the Central Committee of German Catholics (ZdK) together with the Diocese of Münster . The motto of the Catholic Day was: "Search for peace ". After 1852, 1885 and 1930 it was the fourth Catholic day in Münster.

The motto "Search for Peace" made a reference to the end of the First World War in 1918 and the beginning of the Thirty Years' War in 1618, which ended with the Peace of Westphalia in Münster and Osnabrück in 1648. It also took up the psalm word ( Ps 34  EU ) (verse 15: Avoid evil and do good, seek peace and pursue it! ).

Legal entity

For the implementation and handling of the Catholic Day on site, the legal entity sponsoring association of the 101st German Catholic Day Münster 2018 e. V. founded. This registered association under civil law , which was founded jointly by the Central Committee of German Catholics (ZdK) and the Diocese of Münster, provides the economic, legal and organizational means and requirements for planning, implementation and processing on behalf of the organizer of the Catholic Day on site. Roland Vilsmaier is the managing director.

Program and topics

At the largest lay meeting of the Catholic Church in Germany, the Catholic Day motto “Search for peace” was in the foreground. Over 1,200 events took place throughout the city center of Münster over four days, including in the Münsterland Hall , Domplatz , on Lake Aasee and at Münster Castle . 50,000 permanent participants from all over Germany and a further 20,000 day guests were expected. Almost 90,000 tickets were sold on Catholic Day.

Individual subject areas were:

  • Topic 1: "Society and Politics", with a Europe Day under the motto "Search Peace ... Find EUROPE!"
  • Subject area 2: "Church, Theology, Religions", with events on "Church and Theology", "Ecumenism" and "Dialogue of Religions"
  • "Living Worlds", with events on "Colorful Living Worlds", "Children", "Young People", "Women and Men", "Partnerships", "Family", "Generations"
  • "Liturgy workshops", with events on "Liturgy and Peace", "Liturgy and Media" and "Liturgy in larger pastoral care units"
  • "Bible and Spirituality", with discussion groups on questions of faith and life, counseling, accompanying or confessional talks
  • “Culture” with numerous cultural events, such as the Arab Jewish Orchestra from Israel
  • “Church mile” with more than 350 information and meeting offers from the Catholic Church

The grand opening on Domplatz in Münster took place on May 9, 2018, framed by pre- and post-program. Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier , Prime Minister Armin Laschet , ZdK President Thomas Sternberg and the Bishop of Münster, Felix Genn , as well as Notburga Heveling, Chair of the Diocesan Committee of Catholics, addressed the approximately 12,000 visitors.

On May 10, 2018, a major service for the solemn Ascension Day took place on Schlossplatz . On Friday, May 11, 2018, a central ecumenical service was held in St. Paulus Cathedral . The Katholikentag ended on Sunday, May 13th, 2018, with a main service under the direction of Reinhard Cardinal Marx , the chairman of the German Bishops' Conference, on Münster's Schlossplatz.

The Katholikentag in Münster had a budget of 9.3 million euros. The monetary resources were financed by the following donors:

  • 0.982 million euros in material grants from the city of Münster
  • 1.6 million euros from the state of North Rhine-Westphalia
  • 0.4 million euros from the federal government; the Federal Ministry of the Interior promotes the Catholic Day as a forum for social debates
  • 1.5 million euros from the diocese of Münster
  • 1.0 million euros from the Catholic dioceses in Germany
  • 3.6 million euros in income for the organizer (Central Committee of German Catholics)
  • EUR 0.3 million in other income

The church bore around two thirds of the costs for the Catholic Day - 3.6 million euros were income from day tickets, season tickets and stand fees from the organizer, the Central Committee of German Catholics - itself. 2.5 million euros were church grants (Diocese of Münster and the German dioceses). A total of three million euros came from the federal government, the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and the city of Münster.

This must be offset against income from the municipal institutions of the city of Münster, the trade tax of the city of Münster and the award of contracts to local companies. Furthermore, expenses of visitors and participants of the Catholic Day for overnight stays, meals and consumption are to be taken into account. For the city of Münster, non-quantifiable added value accrued for the nationwide media presence over several days in the context of economic development.

Criticism of the Kirchentag funding in public space

Various groups - including the Humanist Press Service - criticized the fact that Catholic Day, as a religious event, was largely financed with public funds. The ZdK applied for benefits beforehand. The city provided benefits in kind of 982,000 euros, although the city owes over 800 million euros and the diocese of Münster has two billion euros in assets.

The city's contributions in kind consisted primarily of the provision of the Münsterlandhalle, schools and other public buildings as well as the visitor's combined ticket for local public transport.
