98th German Catholic Day
The 98th German Catholic Day took place from May 16-20, 2012 in Mannheim . The host was the Archdiocese of Freiburg , which organized the Catholic Day together with the Central Committee of German Catholics . The motto of the Katholikentag was “Dare to set out again”. It was attended by 80,000 people, including 33,000 permanent participants.
After 1902 this was the second Catholic Day in Mannheim. Preparations for 2012 began two years earlier, when the office in Mannheim's Oststadt started its work immediately after the Ecumenical Church Congress 2010 .
The beginning of the Catholic Day was on Wednesday, May 16, with a central opening event on the market square. Then the Archdiocese of Freiburg introduced itself. On Thursday, May 17th, there was an Ascension Day service; on Sunday, May 20th, the main service with 20,000 participants in the courtyard of Mannheim Palace . Overall, there were more than 80 church services with special thematic and liturgical accents during Catholic Day.
From Thursday to Saturday events took place in four subject areas:
- Paths to a Sustainable Church
- Paths to a Culture of Justice
- Paths to a Culture of Life
- Paths to a Culture of Responsibility for the Common Good
The central venue was the Mannheim rose garden . Many of the more than 1,200 events were held across the entire city center and the neighboring districts. Twelve centers with focus topics were set up in schools. The church mile in the city center had more than 250 stands and several action stages.
