The 2018 general election in Malaysia for Dewan Rakyat , the lower house of the Malaysian parliament, took place on May 9, 2018.

Election result

The opposition alliance Pakatan Harapan (German Alliance of Hope ), led by the former long-time Prime Minister Mahathir bin Mohamad , won the majority in the 222 MPs Dewan Rakyat, replacing the Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition of Prime Minister Najib Razak , which the country has been since ruled Malaysia's independence from Great Britain in 1957.

On May 10, 2018, Mahathir, at the age of 92, was sworn in as Prime Minister, making him the world's oldest head of government. On May 21, 2018, Mahathir presented his new cabinet. The wife of long-imprisoned politician Anwar Ibrahim , Wan Azizah Wan Ismail , leader of the People's Justice Party (PKR), became Malaysia's first deputy prime minister.

Ahead of the 2018 elections, the BN faced voter anger over the high cost of living and a government investment fund corruption scandal that began in 2015. In January 2018, Mahathir announced that he was running for the post of Prime Minister with the stated aim of replacing his former protégé, Prime Minister Najib, in office. During the election campaign, the BN promised, among other things, more public holidays, no tolls during the sugar festival and tax exemptions for Malaysians under 26 years of age. The Pakatan Harapan promised to abolish the consumption tax (known as GST) and fight corruption.
