Wan Azizah Wan Ismail (born December 3, 1952 ) is a Malaysian politician and doctor .

Ismail first attended St. Nicholas Convent School in Alor Setar . She then went to Tunku Kurshiah College in Seremban . After graduating from high school, she studied medicine at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland , where she graduated. She returned to Malaysia and worked as a doctor in the civil service for 14 years. In the course of her husband's political rise, she became involved in political lobbying. Ismail is the wife of the Malaysian politician Anwar Ibrahim .

After her husband was arrested on September 20, 1998 for alleged corruption and homosexual acts , she became the leader of the Reformasi reform movement . Her husband was convicted and served a prison term. She led the ADIL , a civil rights organization, and helped found the opposition National Justice Party on April 4, 1999, of which she was elected first chairman. In 1999 she was elected to the Malaysian Parliament. On August 3, 2003, the National Justice Party merged with the Parti Rakyat Malaysia and the opposition party Parti Keadilan Rakyat was formed .

Ismail is currently the leader of the opposition Parti Keadilan Rakyat . From 1999 to 2008, she was an elected MP in Dewan Rakyat for the city of Permatang Pauh , Penang . On July 31, 2008, she gave back her seat in order to enable her husband, who has meanwhile been released from prison, to be re-elected as a member of parliament. Her husband Anwar Ibrahim won the elections on August 26, 2008, and he is an elected MP for the city of Permatang Pauh .
