In Indonesia, the period after Suharto's resignation in May 1998 is referred to as Reformasi (German: Reform ) or Era Reformasi (German reform period ) . It replaced the time of the Orde Baru ( the New Order ), with which the reign of Suharto (1966-1998) is designated, which was characterized by militarism, bureaucratization and repression.

During the Reformasi period, democratic reforms were initiated in Indonesia and restrictions on the press were relaxed. A referendum was also held in East Timor . In it, the people of East Timor spoke out in favor of independence from Indonesia, which was officially recognized on May 20, 2002.
